Yes, every Tuesday morning is a mad dash. I feel like it isn't their job to tidy my house, it's their job to clean it, and it's my job to put it in a condition that they can do this, so I try to clear off most of the surfaces, tidy up the toys, and empty the sink of dishes.

But, like you, I also make my own bed and hang up the towels in a hotel room.

Yep the night before I pick stuff up and put it away. I would rather that she focus on cleaning as opposed to organizing, and then she is out of there in less time too!

Yep. I pay her to clean not to pick up. So I try to clear surfaces as best I can even if I have to pile stuff up on the beds.

@irene: Also, my mom has had cleaning ladies forever and she's had quite a few complain to her about the "clutter" and "piles" in other people's houses and how it makes it so hard to actually clean.

Yes we do! It helps us stay neat. I have a cleaning person to do things like floors and the bathroom so to me it’s still totally worth it!

I feel like the best part of having a cleaning lady is to help me deal with my clutter on the regular! She will absolutely tidy up but I would rather she spend her time actually cleaning vs putting stuff away.

Yes, I don’t want someone to come and tidy. We do they pretty well. I want them to deep clean, not spend hours putting things away.

@irene: yes and it irritates me every time I have to do it, haha...but I agree with others that I the US, the cleaning lady’s job is cleaning, not tidying (that’s not true everywhere). If I don’t tidy, my cleaner kind of puts things away, but chucks other things in random places, so it’s incentive to do it myself!

Yep, especially the kid's stuff. If I didn't live with 3 slobs, the cleaning lady could just come and clean without having to put stuff away first :silly:, but then, maybe I wouldn't even need a cleaning lady! But seriously, I don't want the kids thinking someone is going to put their toys away for them, so they have to do it. The cleaning lady cleans.

@Mrsbells: I have always WAH or been a student since we've had a cleaning lady, so I'm constantly home. I just basically work at my desk while she's here, so I'm out of the way.

Wow 50 votes and 100% say yes! The whole family helps tidy up before our cleaner comes. It’s part of our Wednesday night routine. I like having the toys and mess put away so she can concentrate on other stuff. It’s a good opportunity to clean all the junk off the counters that has accumulated over the week. It’s nice coming home after she has cleaned to a clean and tidy house (for 5 minutes and then the kids have wrecked it again!)

Yes, otherwise she has to spend so much time putting the kids toys away. I try to make sure that the dishes are put away because she is too short to reach where we keep lots of things and I can't find stuff when she empties the dishwasher. She always ends up doing some tidying... our apartment stays pretty tidy thanks to our nanny and because it's tiny so generally it's not too bad.
