I think I want to teach DS to use these terms but it would likely be odd in our area (the north east). Do you teach these words? Is it common where you are to say "yes sir" or "yes ma'am"?

We won't teach them that, but it's not the norm for us. Of course, we will teach respect!

It is very unusual on Long Island to hear kids use those terms. My Southern cousins called my aunt and uncle "ma'am" and "sir."
ETA - same as @bao: we will teach respect to R but I doubt we will have her use those terms...maybe though!

Yes. It's common where DH and I grew up. I'm not sure how common it is where we are now. It would feel weird to us if we didn't.

I am trying to teach R to say yes/no ma'am. She isn't old enough yet to grasp it though. I am from NE and it isn't common at all.

It is not very common around here (though not entirely uncommon, either), but my husband is adamant that LO be taught to use "sir" and "ma'am".
As long as she is respectful, I *personally* don't care if she uses the terms, but since it is so important to her daddy, we'll go with it!

Nope, not common here (in the Pacific Northwest) and neither of us grew up saying it so we won't be teaching it

I don't think I've ever used the word "ma'am" non-sarcastically in my life. So no, I won't teach my kids that
pomelo / 5258 posts
No. LO would spend her childhood apologizing to people she "ma'am-ed". It's practically an insult here.

Nope. Our nieces are taught that because they live in the South and it's super weird when they say "yes, m'am" to me.
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
Yes, we will. Many of my 4/5 year old students say "yes ma'am" and it's just seen as respectful in my area.

I was raised saying it but it isn't common where I live now. I'll teach him to say it but not sure how much I will enforce it.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
Nope. No one says that around here. We called adults Mr or Mrs whoever until they asked us to use their first name. That's what we'll teach LO.
eggplant / 11824 posts
No; I do not like the enforcement of those terms for children.
pomelo / 5298 posts
Yes, we live in the South. DH is from the South and this is how he was raised. I wasn't raised this way, but use both terms without hesitation in my daily life. Heck, I even say ma'am to LO. For us it's just an extension of manners. She's being taught to say please when asking for something and thank you when something is given to her. She also says bless you when someone sneezes.

It's common where we're from and we will teach our sons to use sir and ma'am.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
No, it's really not used here in Michigan and I don't use it myself. I'll teach him to be respectful, of course, but I cannot tell you how many customers I've had that will get offended if you call them ma'am. Sir generally goes over fine, but I still don't see it being part of my child's regular vocabulary.

Dear god, no. I left Texas for a good reason. Please and thank you, for sure. Can't lose all my southern roots.
pineapple / 12234 posts
No, I don't use those words so I wouldn't expect my children to. Please, thank you, pardon me and yes instead of yeah are all that I really enforce.

Not common where we are but DH grew up with that and is in the military...so it's important to him. So I think so!
clementine / 984 posts
@JerricaBenton: Same here. Miss So-and-So or Mr. So-and-So, yes, but no ma'am-ing up here. Women are genuinely offended. Haha!

I'm in Texas.. It's very common here and yes. I want to teach LO these terms.. In Spanish too! it's common among the Spanish speaking communities around here as well
eggplant / 11408 posts
Maybe? It's not common where we live, but my parents did teach it to me in certain situations. I also lived in the south, where it was super common. I scold my dog with "no, ma'am", so it's possible
nectarine / 2878 posts
It's common where I live (Oklahoma) and I was raised using them, so I will be teaching him those terms for certain situations. I will also be teaching him to address familiar adults with Miss/Mr. so and so.
