When we chose Elliot's names we planned on using Eli as a nickname. We haven't so far! He just doesn't seem like an Eli to me. Maybe he will when he gets older?
Did you use the nn that you planned for your LO?

Same here! We named her Noelle, with the intention of using Ellie as a nickname, but for the first two years we only called her Noelle because we wanted her to learn her name... now it sounds almost wrong if we try to call her by her nn. Maybe in a few years...

Yup! I loved the name Cobi, it was on my short list. But DH didn't want a four letter name, so we found Jacobi. We use both equally and J answers to both.

We didn't plan a nn for P and still haven't really found one. She's Oppi (like poppy drop the p) out at my grandparents b/c my grandpa "re-named" all us grandkids/great grandkids but otherwise we call her variations of her name. Pee-na-loupe (like cantaloupe), Pe-newly, etc.

DS is Joel and at the time we were happy it didn't have an obvious nn but we sometimes call him Joely (not Jolie...more like how Pauly sounds if that makes sense) when he's being silly.

We didn't plan for E to have a nn but I often call him Ev.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
@Running Elley: yes, so much so that we are considering a legal name change to shorten her name! But her nn is definitely a standalone name too.
coconut / 8681 posts
@googly-eyes: Now I'm curious what the names are!! Also curious because I'm considering naming DD a standalone nn.

We planned on calling LO by his middle name but ended up calling him by his first name when he was born!
pineapple / 12234 posts
Yes. We actually chose the nn Elly before we chose Elizabeth. I just hope people don't think it's a stretch (most ask if her real name is Eleanor). We wanted a distinguished full name and a fun/cute nn.
persimmon / 1420 posts
For both. DS is a fifth, and with that many Johns around, we had to do a little separation, so he's Jack. DD is also Ellie, short for Elizabeth, just like @HLK208.

Nope! I chose her name for the nn. I wanted to call her Emi. But she's not an Emi at all. We mainly call her by her whole name or other various terms of endearment. Sometimes I call her Ems.
honeydew / 7917 posts
My LO's name is Elliot too! I never had any intention to give him a nickname, and his name fits him very well.
pomelo / 5093 posts
My daughter's name is Beatrix, and I'd planned to call her Trixy. NOPE. We call her Bebe or Bee. She calls herself Bebe. She will be Bebe forever, I think, and it's for sure not the name I would have picked. But there it is.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts
She's been known by a nickname since pre-birth. I've got a sneaky feeling she'll be one of those pre-schoolers who doesn't realize her actual name. Oops. We'll have to think about that in a few years.

Yes, he answers to all of his names- Cameron, Cam, Cammy... and Boobah. We still aren't sure how he got that last one!
My husband isn't a fan of -y nicknames, but he's been caught calling him Cammy too from time to time. Early on I told him that as the mommy I get to call him whatever I want, including -y nicknames.
We had also been considering Colin and Calvin, loved Cal as a nickname, couldn't really see one for Colin that we would use, and we both liked Cameron better than Cam, but it just comes naturally now.

@Running Elley: from your other post I know you are considering Evelyn for your baby girl. That's my LO's middle
name :). When we "practiced" using that name while I was pregnant we kept shortening it to Evy...and while we loved that name we ended up with a different first name that we thought we would never shorten. We named her Clara thinking no nickname for her...well we call her Clarie a lot (rhymes with Mary) but sometimes when we are being silly we say it like we are speaking French (like cheri)
My SIL was names Jennifer but went by Jenna her whole life bc there were so many Jennifers...and she legally changed her name when she got older.

We called our LO one nickname while I was pregnant, but now we never use it! I am not sure why... its like we forgot about it! We now call her by her full name or we call her munchkin.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
We call our LO all kinds of nicknames but none that derive from her name. It's pretty hard to shorten Emily, although my brother calls her Em-Em. We call her Emily about half the time (she answers to it) but also Bubby Boo, Bubbity Boo, and Boo Boo, all of which she responds to. I certainly didn't intend to call my daughter such silly nicknames but things just sort of happen!
pineapple / 12526 posts
Nope. I think it's been used once? lol. We planned on using Charlie, but we just use her full name.
pomelo / 5321 posts
DS's nickname was Butterbean while I was pregnant. We use it a good bit but we use his actual name a lot more. I call him Bean and Peanut a lot too but Butterbean doesn't get used as much as I thought it would.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
We called her Nugget, or Nuggs for short, when pregnant since we kept her name a secret. DH and I will call her that sometimes but everyone else calls her by her name. Which I haven't figured out a nickname for that I like.

Finley is "Fin" 50% of the time and "Finley" the other 50% of the time.
GOLD / grapefruit / 4007 posts
Yes ! Jacks full name is jackson but we always intended to call him jack !
grapefruit / 4006 posts
nope. she has two nn that we like, but we have been calling her by her full name. i figure her nn's will come into play when she makes friends and they start calling her by her nn.

Lo's name doesn't have a nickname...but I have plenty of other silly things I call him. Hopefully he realizes what his real name is!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
I don't really understand why people choose nicknames prior to the baby being here so we did not do that. To me a nickname is something that happens through the child not predetermined.
pomelo / 5720 posts
We only use his nn, as he is the third and I didn't want there to be any confusion
We sometimes call him Charles for fun, but not often.
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@regberadaisy: I think she means shortening names as well. Eli for Elliot.
We use our nicknames but have come up with lots of other ones, too!
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
We didn't plan it. My mom asked me if I'd use a nickname, and I said I'd just have to wait to meet her and see.
persimmon / 1171 posts
We planned on calling her Soph, but now we call her Soph-meister or Soso (because she's so-soooo pretty)
blogger / nectarine / 2608 posts
We planned on Laura or Laurel (more likely) for Lorelei and don't really use either that often. She will now refer to herself as 'Lita because I call her Lorelita so often. She also calls herself Lorelei now, which is too unbelivably cute in a third-person Queen of England sort of way. Ellie didn't have a planned nickname, but she is usually Peanut, which is more of a pet name than a nickname anyway.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
Sadie doesn't come with a nickname. We mostly call her Sadie Bug/Bug/Buggie. Dan calls her all sorts of weird things... like Sadine (think sardine).
@HLK208: FWIW, I would assume Elizabeth before Eleanor if someone told me their daughter's name was Elly!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Yes, Xander probably will have no idea that his real name is Alexander! We've been calling him Xander since birth (and even have personalized items that say Xander on them, nothing says Alexander). Oh well!
pear / 1837 posts
@Smurfette: We called our baby nugget/nuggs when I was pregnant too! We were team green but we did think if we had a girl (which we did) we would use a nickname. Her name is Ellison and we thought we would call her Ellie, but it just doens't suit her at this point. So she's Ellison or "Elle" or Boo Boo (not a Honey Boo Boo reference!)
grapefruit / 4066 posts
nope! we planned on her nn being mia but we have never used it- she just doesn't look at all like a mia! her full name suits her perfectly- we also use a ton of other nicknames though- honey, porkchop, minabean
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
yup! it took us awhile - we called her by her full name for months, but now we call her by her full name, or nn.
