We try not to have the tv on too much with J around, sometimes I need something else though. If you do watch tv with LO around, what do you put on? An adult show or a kids show?

Yup! We watch the news after dinner and sometimes we watch a movie on Friday night.

We have it on a lot but she is not interested in anything but sports.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
the only time the tv is on when she's home is when I let her watch Elmo or mickey.

We watch the news for half an hour or so in the morning. Other than that I turn it off if she's awake. I guess I'll have to get my news elsewhere when she's old enough to understand!
kiwi / 649 posts
Edit- She also watches PBS in the AM for a little bit. It gives me a little time to get dressed and stuff
We don't really sensor anything. This includes music, too.

@travelingnanny: I've been writing a post about censorship for the longest time!
We never watch TV when the girls are around. We have pretty stringent media rules that we find are easier to enforce if there is really no grey area.

My LO is only 3 months, but he already loves to stare at the TV and I've found that he is in a much worse mood and very difficult to put down for naps on days that it's turned on in the background - I think it just overstimulates him. So we generally save any TV watching for after he's in bed.
I really don't want to set the habit of having the TV on all the time anyways, we've only had satellite for 2 years and DH was already in the bad habit of always wanting it on, channel surfing, and ending up watching some dumb show he doesn't even care about it rather than just turning it off! So it's been nice to break him of that habit.

@Mrs. Twine- I knew I spelled that word wrong! Ugh, journalist fail! If you need any help, I'd be more than willing to add what I can.

Most of the time we make sure the TV is off while he's awake (unless he's been really fussy and I NEED to make dinner so I turn on Curious George or something). On a rare occasion I'll fold laundry while he's awake and turn on a show to entertain me while I'm doing it. It's usually an adult show and he doesn't pay attention- he just plays with his toys in the same room.
I've also been trying to keep my iphone put away while he's awake.

I've been trying to figure this out. C is only four weeks and we have it on a lot now, but once she can notice it ill want it off when she's in the room. Our tv is huge too- even when I let her watch something ill want it on a smaller screen.
blogger / coconut / 8306 posts
We always have the TV in for background noise. We're really bad at this, and even sleep with our tv on in the bedroom.
During the day, ill let her watch Disney junior but not all day long. We watch the news, the today show, and in the afternoons/evenings we watch adult tv shows that we consider PG but we don't veg on the couch. It's just background noise.
Shows like dexter, shameless, breaking bad, etc etc are DVRed and watched after Chloe is fast asleep!

We always have it on for background noise. But she 5.5 months so she doesn't pay that much attention to it. She tried to watch it more as a newborn.

I turn on the 24 hr news channel (our equivalent of CNN) for the morning news, but other than that, it's off. I have yet to turn on a children's program for her so she takes no notice of the tv while I'm watching the news.
I have a feeling once baby #2 comes along, this will change (LO will be 19 months then).
pomegranate / 3759 posts
Oh for sure! We dont watch any harsh adult stuff and she is only ever interested in Sesame Street, Dora or Bubble Guppies. I need the background distraction. We record her favorite shows and let her watch a few of them a day. Other than that she doesnt pay attention.
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
We watched about one show a day until maybe a month ago (when she started staring at it at 3 months old). Now it's only on when she is in bed. I worry about the computer more...I use my ipad a lot during the day, like when she is nursing.

We don't normally watch that much TV during the day so it's usually off. But if there's a basketball or football game on that my DH wants to watch, we'll leave it on in the background.

We don't have the TV on during the day. My 3 year old might get to watch 20 min when I am getting dinner ready.

@Andrea: Same! I don't know how else I can get through making dinner without some good ole TV. lol
coconut / 8234 posts
We try not to. We used to have it on when she was a baby, but we tried to reel that in around 9/10 months when she was starting to look at the screen. It means we had to change our lifestyle dramatically because we had the TV on a lot!
Now for background noise we play one of our cable station's music channels, mostly jazz, toddler tunes, and the 90s station. But I'll admit that LO has seen the occasional episode of Jeopardy or House Hunters.
She does get to watch segments of Caillou and Angelina Ballerina a few times a week.

No, I don't watch TV when she's awake. The only time the TV is on when she's up is when DH is watching sports. Which will be more frequent, now that football is starting back up again!
pineapple / 12793 posts
I'll sometimes put on the news or weather when she's in the room. I get bored during the day but really want to limit her exposure to the kardashians.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
I have it on a lot for background noise. I feel less lonely with it on. During the day it's usually kid shows or the Today show once in a great while. Late afternoon (3-5) it's shows like Friends or Ellen. We never watch things like Breaking Bad, for example, in front of her. The only show she ever gives an interest in is baby einstein anyway, so I'm not worried about her watching too much.

not really, i did when he was a newborn a lot, but now he naps in his room and when he is awake, there is no point to having the TV because i can't really watch it if i am playing with him or trying to do chores while wearing him. And if he plays by himself, i use that time to do other stuff that i can't do while wearing him. If i get so lucky to sit down and have lunch while he plays by himself, then i will put on my soap opera for 10 minutes to watch while i eat, but that is rare.
I do take him to the movies and he will watch part of it and sleep for part of it, so i am not against some irregular exposure, it's just not part of routine at home.
honeydew / 7687 posts
Nope. I turn the radio on sometimes for background noise but can't imagine having the TV on all day - I'd be so annoyed by all the commercials!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
Sure. If it's not a kid show, nine times out of ten it is thea cooking show/ home reno show, or a nature show.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
If we're home, there's usually a tv on. We're just tv people. That said, he usually only watches tv if we're sitting with him and its a Disney channel program like Good Luck Charlie. Adult shows are dvr'd in our bedroom, so he never sees those. I don't stress about it. As long as we're playing outside a lot and doing other activities more often that watching tv, we don't worry about it.
papaya / 10560 posts
Not really, not much of a tv watcher until after he's in bed. I've tried on days I'm not feeling well and I can't even get him to watch the tv. He did watch The Goonies with me for a few minutes on Sunday and it was the first time he had done that!
grapefruit / 4582 posts
She watches Elmo's world on Sesame Street but that's all. I save all the watching for when she goes to sleep. We aren't home most of the day anyways so I don't need background noise. I will turn on pandora station or spotify if we are spending time at home
pear / 1895 posts
No, we're not really tv-watching people. Or, DH isn't and he's brought me over to the dark side! I watch some downloaded shows after LO is asleep at night, but during the day the tv is never on.
pear / 1812 posts
I only get TV when I am nursing at night (thank God for smart phones) or we are eating dinner. So, yeah. We also don't plan on restricting TV until a certain age. We don't watch it all day though either so it's not that bad.

I was cracking up today- I turn off the tv after an afternoon show we watched during snack time after his nap.... C turns the tv back on a few minutes later. Amazing the things they pick up! I ended up unplugging the cable box, that did the trick for now....
pomegranate / 3863 posts
We do have it on quite a bit (both news and adult shows), we are TV people, but he is facing away, and has no interest in it. I know it's probably frowned upon but I just got in the habit of having it on all the time for background noise when I was on bed rest for 3 months! We'll probably try to scale back soon, as he becomes more aware of it.
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
The TV is on most of the day, but I would say half the day on mute. The power button is broken on our remote, so as we're so lazy it doesn't get shut off. I only turn it to kids shows for sesame Street and sometimes dinosaur train. I watch the world news while I'm feeding him dinner, but I've been telling myself I have to stop because of the awful things on it.
grapefruit / 4923 posts
we try not to, which is pretty easy to do because LO is 7 months old and still naps a lot. when he gets older and stays up for longer periods of time, though, i'm not sure how we'll avoid it because we watch a lot of tv.
