I work with 1 other lady in a very small office. She goes out to smoke like 5x a day an comes back smelling really really bad! I hate the smell of cigarette smoke. Do you work with ppl that smoke?

We actually won't hire people who smoke. Although, there are 2 people here who do smoke, one of them has been here since smoking was allowed IN the office and before the non-smoking rules were around and the other person was brought over on contract through one of our old CEO's. So she was hired because of him.
I think it's gross. I hate the smell of stale smoke.

@mrsaudi: I'm a SAHM but my parents and brother smoke. I've been out of the house so long that now I can really smell it and it gives me a headache sometimes!

Yep. But he only smokes at lunch time. He never takes extra breaks to go smoke.

I do! He smokes a lot and takes about six 5-10 minute breaks a day! I don't sit near him so I don't smell it but it bugs me how much he is away from his desk when we need to work on something!

Yes, I dont like them coming to talk to me right aftey they havesmoked. I also hate bumping into to them outside the building while they are smoking, because they walways want to talk to me, but I dont to talk tot hem while they are smoking, I dont want to breath in their smoke.

Yes. I am AMAZED at the number of people who I work with that still smoke. At least 5 people in my office of 18 smoke. A few seem to have picked it up as a "social" thing to be "cool" and hang out with the other smokers. Two of those people are in their 30's. Don't you think they would know better? Ugh. I hate how they smell when they come back in the office. I would rather stand next to my co-worker who doesn't use deodorant than stand next to a smoker who has just been outside.

I don't care if someone smokes, but I wouldn't hire someone who smells like smoke during the workday.

@Mrsbells: oh I know I hate when someone who just got done smoking gets really close and is talking about something. Gag!

@.twist.: how are you supposed to know? Do you ask during the interview? Is there not some kind of legal issues with not hiring smokers? Just curious bc I have suggested to my supervisor we hire non smokers but not sure how to go about it!

I work with a woman who smokes like a thousand times a day (ok, maybe 8-10 - at least once an hour). During my first trimester, smelling her made me nauseated. But what makes me more angry is that she is constantly sick and missing work (she gets intermittent FMLA for asthma, if you can believe that). And she says she's so busy and overwhelmed to the point that she can't handle her workload, so I have to do part of her job!
I think starting with our new benefit year this coming year (July 2013), smokers will have to pay higher insurance premiums than nonsmokers.

@mrsaudi: Hm, I think they just ask right in the interview (I didn't have an interview as I was brought over by the same CEO who brought over the smoker). I just know it's our policy, honestly, I think it's a pretty fine line on the legal end.

I work with some smokers and sometimes go outside with them during smoking breaks to get some air. It doesn't bother me at all.

I have worked with smokers in the past and I honestly don't mind them taking breaks during the day. What I do hate though is when smokers gather right outside the office door (or any building) and I have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get in or out. I have asthma and it really irritates my chest - like, go round the corner guys!

We have a few people that smoke who come in to do occasional work, I don't like it at all.

I do, and mainly dislike when I cooped up in a meeting right after they've been outside because then its confined and I always seem to sit right next to them!
