My mom and MIL text sometimes but that's about it

Only at family events that we invite both sets to.

No, just at events for us (birthday parties, etc.). That's intentional on our part. My in-laws are a lot to handle and can say some pretty offensive things, so DH feels very strongly about keeping them separate as much as possible.

Only when they bump into each other in town. I much prefer to keep things separate....

No, they don't have a common language and they don't live on the same continent.

Not really. They get along just fine and interact great while in the same room at family events, but they each have their own sets of social circles and they stick to them.

They live half a country away from each other, but text and/or call each other frequently (especially during hockey season for our dads, and now with a grandkid on the way). Also, my ILs went and stayed with my parents over Christmas a couple of years ago, while DH and I, and my brother and his gf were also visiting. It was a really full house! Anytime my parents come to visit, my ILs make sure to drive up (2+ hrs) for dinner or a weekend stay. It's kind of nice that they get along so well, because they are quite different.

No, they send each other Christmas cards and when my mum's mum died, MIL had a mass dedicated to her, which I thought was really kind. But otherwise no. Which honestly is how I like it. Too much drama in my family, I don't like it bleeding over into my ILs lives.

They chat at events that we invite them both to (birthday parties, etc) or if they both happen to be stopping by to visit at the same time. They are very different and my MIL is totally nuts. I don't need them to have a close relationship.

They do.. Sometimes we actually do holidays together b/c my family is so small (literally just my parents & sister).

Also, my mom picks up DD from my MIL 2 days a week so they see each other more than I see MIL!

They only live 30 mins apart, but have only seen each other maybe 4x since we got married 7 years ago? They don't have anything in common and there is a language barrier.

@mrbee: My parents and in-laws don't talk outside of family events they're both at. They've only met a few times. both families are about 5 hours apart which contributes to that.
I would assume that the next time they see eachother would be when we have a baby.

My family and my MIL/step-FIL are pretty close. It's more like they're all just extended family. But my FIL isn't close to anyone, so they aren't close with him. They didn't even meet until just before our wedding and we have dated since high school.

They live in different states. My parents see MIL sometimes when she comes to visit us and they send each other Christmas cards, but that's about it. They seem to enjoy what little time they do spend together though.

My parents and in-laws see each other a lot. They split childcare of LO during the week. So they coordinate scheduling conflicts with each other before they even involve me. It's pretty amazing.

We also do a lot of holidays together because my husband is an only child and my sisters live far away.

A few times/year and it's painful with my mom and MIL. The dads get along great, but my mom treated my MIL pretty horribly, and now doesn't understand why my MIL just prefers not to be around my mom.

Yes they were really good friends years before DH and I got together. Dhs family has moved away since then, but they come here often and my family always gets together with them when they do. It works out really well for holidays!

They live in different cities, and my mom thinks that they're total weirdos, so not very often. The ILs have done some weird things, like my FIL lied to my mom about his whereabouts at our baby's Christening and my MIL made them a half hour late for our wedding rehearsal (and my mom hates being late) and she is very high strung and difficult. So I can see why my mom isn't into them, but I do nag her to be the bigger person and extend an invite when either of my ILs are visiting.

My parents and inlaws live about 30 minutes away from each other and have only met once in 8 years. I assume they may run into each other at the hospital when I give birth in a couple of months...

They get along well enough, but don't interact much other than when we invite them both somewhere. I'm curious to see if that will change when they share a grandchild. They live eight hours apart, though, so it's not like they'll be grabbing lunch all the time or anything.
