Was your doctor's estimate of your LO's birth weight off by much or pretty true to size? I had an appointment today (30wks) and he thinks I'm going to have a 10 pounder and at my next appointment I am having a sizing ultrasound done.

My Drs never gave me an estimate for my first two pregnancies but my perinatologist thought LO 3 was going to be 5lbs and she was 6lbs, 2 ounces.

I had 37 week growth scans for both pregnancies because my fendal height was short. LO1 measured 7.5lbs that day so she should have been almost 9.5lbs when she was born at 40+5. She was 6lbs10oz. DS measured slightly smaller at 37 weeks (7lbs?) and was slightly bigger when born at 40 w 7lbs5oz.

Doctor kept telling me I had an average-sized baby in there. LO was 10 lbs. and everyone was shocked. I think my doctor was embarrassed because we never discussed how big the baby was at any of my pp appointments. I had asked to be induced early because I thought the baby was big but he waited until 40+3 to induce.

My doctor told me at 30 weeks that I was going to deliver a 10 lb plus baby. She said she was measuring in the 99th percentile, and started talking about the risks of vaginally delivering such a huge baby (shoulder dystocia, broken bones, etc.). It terrified me. She even had me take the GD tests twice over the course of my pregnancy (even though I passed with flying colors) because she thought maybe GD was causing my baby to be so "big."
I was scheduled for ultrasounds every 2 weeks after that so they could monitor her growth. I was put on a strict "Atkins Diet" and was told to cut out sugar and carbs, even though I didn't have GD.
At 36 weeks I was told she was well over 8 pounds, and 15 days later (at 38+1) she was born at 7 lbs, 3 oz, and 18 inches long. So much for huge!

They were off by just a few ounces with my first two. But underestimated by almost a pound with my third. They said around 10.5 at 40 weeks. She was 10.75 at 38.

The day I was admitted to be induced due to pre-eclampsia the doctor estimated she was 8lbs. LO was born 5lbs 14oz!! She was so tiny, the doctor immediately told the midwife to start looking for another baby. I was terrified! But, that's how much extra liquid I was carrying due to the swelling.

My baby was measuring large and at my 39 week sizing ultrasound they predicted 9lb10oz, with a head off the charts. They pushed for a c-section, but he was only 8lb13oz when born. His head was as large as predicted though! I think that might have been what threw everything else off.

@Corduroy: I had a similar experience. My LO measured 7.5 lbs at my 37 week scan and was born 6lb 9oz at 39 weeks

My last ultrasound showed DS was measuring in the higher 7lbs range. DS was born 6lbs 5ounces.

My doctor said DS1 would be between 7-8lbs. He was 9lbs1oz.
With DS2, they just said "your first was big, so in all likelihood, this one will be too". He was "only" 7lbs9oz.

I had GD with both pregnancies controlled by diet. Measured normal with LO1, and he was 5 lbs 13 oz born at 38w 4d. Doctors were concerned with lower than average weight with LO2, and he was monitored weekly. It bugged me so much at the time because he was on track to measure around the same as his brother. He was born at 39w 1d weighing 6 lbs even.

I had an ultrasound at 36w 2d that said DD was 8 pounds. I went in to labor that night and she was born the next day at 6 lbs 14oz but with a really large head. They said head measurements are a big part of the weight estimate so when the head is really large it can mess it up.

I never had an ultrasound to estimate weight (last u/s was at 20 weeks both times) but based just on feeling and measuring my belly with my first, I was told "a good size baby". She was just over 8 lbs (with a big head).
For my second based on belly and the size of my first she estimated about a quarter of a pound more, which was spot on.
They won't do real size estimates since they can vary so much.

I had an ultrasound at 40+1 and the tech said he was measuring at 7.5 lbs. he was 7 lbs 1 oz. I think my fundal height was measuring average all along. I didn't have excess swelling or fluid at any point in my pregnancy - I still had my wedding ring on when I delivered! So maybe that accounted for the good estimate.

I never had a late term ultrasound or had an official estimate as to the size of the baby, but my midwife would feel around my stomach during my exams, and just by feeling she could tell they were big boys. She estimated both about 9 pounds. My first son was 8 pounds 15 ounces and my second son was 8 pounds 14 ounces.

DD was 1 lb smaller and DS was 2 lb smaller. I think the margin of error is even larger with twins, as they are all jumbled up in there, but we were all still surprised they were so tiny at 38 weeks!

My first they estimated 7lbs and he was 8lbs even. My second the said 6lbs7oz at 36 weeks and thought he was going to be "average" sized. No specific estimation although my doctor said close to 8lbs. He was 8lbs 10 oz at 40 weeks exactly.

He would never tell me. He said there was no way to accurately tell so there was no point.

My OB estimated 6-6.5 lbs based on palpation at around 37 or 38 weeks. In the hospital during labor (39 wks) the attending physician made the same estimate, again based on palpation. When LO was born at almost 8.5 lbs, everyone was shocked! My OB said "where were you hiding him?!"

They estimated lo would be 7 lbs the day I was induced and she was 5lbs 13 oz. they told me that the estimates are more accurate at the extremes, but can be very off for average sized babies

DS1, OB said he'll be 7/7.5, he was 8 lbs 11 oz.
DS2, OB didn't say, but the resident gave me an u/s when I had checked in for delivery and said 5.5 lbs an hour before birth. He was 8 lbs.

With my last, I had an ultrasound on a Monday and he's weight was estimated at 8lbs (ish, can't remeber rhe exact weight) and he was born that Wednesday and weighed 7lbs 8oz. I was actually impressed with how close they were.

My midwives don't put much stock in late-pregnancy ultrasounds for measuring baby, so they don't do them. The margin for error is huge!

@mrsrain: Same here. They never gave me any estimations at all and I didn't have an ultrasound after 20 weeks.
pomegranate / 3350 posts
With LO1 I was measuring so small I had a lot of growth ultrasounds and they were accurate within a couple ounces.
Because of LO2's small size I had a couple ultrasounds after the anatomy scan but not really close to my due date. He measured just over 50th percentile and was 7lb 15 oz.
watermelon / 14467 posts
I never had growth ultrasounds after 20 weeks (my ultrasounds were to check on her corneal plexus cysts), but my midwife thought I would have a 7.5-8lb. baby based on palpating and she was 7 lbs, 10.8 ounces at birth.
pomegranate / 3516 posts
With my first they thought she was going to be 8.5-9lb at her due date. She was 8lb 5oz when she was born four days late.
With my second, an ultrasound at 41.5 weeks supposedly showed 9lb 5oz but she said that's give or take a pound. The midwife felt my stomach and guessed that it was probably closer to the lower end but that was a contributing factor to my induction just in case she was 10lb. She was born the next day at 8lb 5oz.

LO was 8 pounds exactly, born at 40+2.
Had an ultrasound and appointment right at 40 weeks and my OB predicted LO would be between 8 and 9, closer to 9 while the ultrasound tech guessed LO would be 8 on the dot - - tech was 100% right!
They both said LO's head would be huge, which was also true.

With my first growth ultrasound was measuring 10lbs+. I went into labor later that day (40wks4days) and he was born the next afternoon, weighing 8lbs. 9oz.
Didn't have a growth ultrasound with my second.

Everyone said DD was going to be small (most doctors guessed around 7 lbs.). She ended up being 8 lb. 10 oz. As soon as she came out the doctor's first comment was, "This is not a small baby!"

@Rainbow Sprinkles: that article is spot on!
With my first, my doctor kept saying he was going to be a big baby, probably around 10 lbs, and at 38w5d scheduled an ultra sound to check, and told me that we would probably want to schedule a c section and started freaking me out (he was a very calm Doctor, so when he got serious it was terrifying) well my water broke before my follow up appointment on Monday and I delivered an 8lb 5 oz baby at 39 weeks.
This time it just freaks me out because I have a new OB and he's saying it and doing the ultrasound so much earlier.

Doctor guessed around 8lbs and the ultrasound tech guessed 8lbs 2oz. He was 8 lbs 4 oz

I think they estimated her to be at least 7 lbs and she came out 6 lbs 4 oz.
