I'm watching for the first time in a long time and they're showing one of the daughters (Jill, I think?) being courted. Ohhh myyyy gahh this is so awkward! Does anyone else still watch this show?

Me! The courting stuff is over the top. I get secondhand embarrassment.

I can't explain why, but I'm pretty obsessed with the show. It does get suuuper awkward a lot but I just can't stop watching it.

I loved when she was talking about how a side hug was their happy medium.

@lawbee11: she's so well spoken, but the "so.." at the end of almost every sentence is driving me crazy.

@lawbee11: I asked DH why he didn't give me side hugs. I'm so glad I'm not the only one watching this.

I watch it but only on netflix, I did read that in people magazine though, I can't even imagine...so weird!

I like the show but rarely watch it. I read about her being courted in People, and when I saw the commercials I thought it was majorly awkward.

I watch it - DH used to watch it with me but the courtship stuff is toooo awkward. He feels sorry for the guys.

I am obsessed with it. No idea why! I get teary at least once an epi. And I am a non-religious Canadian.

I haven't watched that show in forever, now I'm going to have to start again.

I watch it because I grew up near them! We used to run into them at Sam's Club lol

@ALV91711: Same here! I used to watch it all the time and just fell out of it.
Anyone watch "My Five Wives"? I am guilty! Not a fan of "Sister Wives" because Kody Brown creeps me out.

I only watched a few episodes- my mom and little sister are obsessed with the show though lol

I watch! I think the courting is sweet. I saw on Facebook that Jill and Derrick are engaged. Their wedding is in June. Jessa (I'm pretty sure it's Jessa!) has been in a courtship too.

I watch it obsessively on Netflix. Can't wait to see the courting some day!

I just started watching it at bit this season because I was interested in the courting process. I agree that its majorly awkward. I love how obedient the kids are, though. But I wonder if all the girls truly are that obedient. There has to be at least one rebellious child in the group, right?
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
I usually only watch it if there's nothing else on, but I am DVRing this season because I am fascinated by the courtship stuff!

@MrsMcD: lol that's what I wonder too! At least ONE has to have a rebellious streak!

DH and I both love the show actually. We like living without debt, we've become interested in homeschooling, we would like to structure our careers/businesses in such a way that we can both be accessible to our kids like Jim Bob and Michelle, and we both want our family to be service-oriented in the community. And we are huge proponents of courtship.
After dating "normally" through college and our 20s, when it came time for us to start dating (we were 29), we decided on our own to enter into a courtship. DH didn't ask my Dad's permission (language barriers), but we did talk beforehand with each other about our intentions behind wanting to date (marriage), and then once we agreed on "terms" we informed our families and close friends so they could support us on our journey. When DH was ready to propose, he drove 3000 miles to ask my parents' permission and we got married 6 months later.
All this is to say, we are big fans of courtship and think we both would have saved ourselves a lot of time and energy if we'd practice courting over dating. My parents tried to explain courtship to me when I was younger, but being immigrants, it sounded like arranged marriage to me (which is how they married). But now I see its really quite different. We are now very interested in raising our children to understand the difference and encourage them to go with courtship.

I'm not watching it, mainly because I don't have cable -- just Netflix -- but I'll be watching this season when it comes out on Netflix because I'm curious to see how the Duggars do courtship.
I grew up in a very conservative, Evangelical Christian background where courtship was the norm so I've seen lots of courtships progress and it seems every family does it a bit different. (As for me, my parents weren't big on the courtship thing despite raising us in those circles, so I dated DH but it was a serious relationship from the get go.)

I'm not a huge reality show fan, but I love the TLC family shows. DH hates them, but if I have the remote he will watch and make snarky comments.
The Duggars are SO fascinating to me. I want to study them. I wish I was studying anthropology, because they would be the topic of my thesis.
I also think the sister wives shows are interesting. I have so many opinions on everything. I was really surprised to learn that the Williams(?) are for marriage equality
I really like the Little Couple, and I've loved watching their adoption journey and Jen going through her cancer fight. But I could see their show getting a bit boring to me because they are too "mainstream". They are just totally normal people.

@hotchildinthecity: I love, love, love the Little Couple!
Not a fan of 19 kids and counting though... the entire show creeps me out!

@TemperanceBrennan: Same here. I'm fascinated by the Duggars and the plural marriage shows, and DH hates them. Except I'm not a Kody fan {from Sister Wives} but that's only because I think that he's douchey.
While the Duggars lifestyle/belief system isn't for me, I applaud the job they have done raising their children and admire their commitment to their faith.
I've also enjoyed seeing Anna's transformation. She seemed so homely when she came on the scene, and now she's more confident. And her daughter is adorable!

@gingerbebe: This is so interesting. Would it be threadjacking to ask you to explain briefly the difference between dating and courting?
coconut / 8498 posts
@gingerbebe: Word. We have a very similar view on dating. Our pre-marriage relationship definitely didn't look like a Duggar's, but it was very different than what is the norm.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
@simplyfelicity: YES. I think my five wives is MUCH more real than sister wives. They had reactions/emotions that felt more in line with what I'd be (I assume) experiencing in a plural marriage.
I need to DVR because the courtship stuff seems so interesting to me. Honestly NO ONE I knew did courtship but it seems appealing over all the dating BS I dealt with over the years.
Has the ep aired with the daughter in another country to court, with Jim Bob as the chaperone? I am dying to know what happens based on the commercial where he says something like "it was great to meet you buttttt" COMMERCIAL CLIFFHANGER!

@lawbee11: So cool! I love the Little Couple. DH saw them once walking around Seattle with their son.
pear / 1998 posts
@kjpugs: SPOILER!!! Yes, they aired that episode last night, but it was just the editing that made it suspenseful. He asked, she said yes.
The one thing I hate about this show is that they show the same thing so many times. "On this episode of 19 kids and counting", "Coming up...", etc, etc. and they show the same clip each time.
