I am really motivated to exercise if I'm gonna be TTC-ing in about 6 months... But I have decided that morning is just not gonna work. I know night time isn't the most ideal, but does anyone work out at night? Is it a really bad idea?

I'm training for a half marathon mostly at night. There are some days that I don't get home from work until 6:30. Eating dinner and getting the boys to bed is my priority from 6:30-8:30, and I hop on the treadmill right afterwards. My long runs are on the weekends, so I usually do those during the day.
It's what works for me. I can't seem to get my butt moving in the morning, and I'm a night owl. So I run at night, shower, and hit the hay!

@2PeasinaPod: Some people say not to exercise at night because it might make it harder to fall asleep, do you run into this problem? I'm also a night owl so I'm starting to think I might need to do this also.

I work out at night and love it! It is my time to unwind. I go after my kids are in bed on the days my husband doesn't have to close at work. If I try to workout in the AM before work, I end up hitting snooze and not going.

I workout whenever I can squeeze it in. Evenings don't really cause problems for falling asleep for me.

I do occasionally (I did it last night for example, because my LO woke up early and interrupted my morning workout). But I don't like it because it wakes me up and makes it hard to fall asleep. However, I find it better than not working out at all. If night works better than mornings for you, go for it!

I'm def gonna try it! I'm free starting 8:30pm as long as all goes well with bedtime, haha. Take some time to clean up, change, etc, I'd probably be aiming at 9:15-9:45 with stretches before/after. Then I still have like half an hour to relax/spend w/ DH since we don't sleep till 10:30-11 usually!

I used to before I had DS and I loved it. If I was at all currently motivated to work out (I'm not!), I would do it at night. DH runs and he prefers to do that at night too. DS goes to bed early so we have way more time to ourselves at night than in the morning (he's an early riser).

@jape14: us too, so that's why getting up at least an hour before she gets up is just... NO.

@snowjewelz: exactly. I switched to showering at night bc I can't make myself get up that early!!

Always did this. Eat dinner, workout, shower, sleep. Between the work out and the shower I would get so sleepy!

Oh I'm so glad to hear this! I am having the worst time waking up before the kids. One or both are up by 530 and getting up earlier seems impossible.

Omg... So I suggested this to DH last night... His response is... So what about just having sex every night as exercise? I have no response, lol.
ANYWAY, I'm gonna start on Monday! I don't even know what I'm going to do yet... I can't find my old Jillian Michaels DVDs, but I do have Bikini Body Guide...

@snowjewelz: HA. well you have had the baby itch, soooo.... ;P also, you are superwoman if you work out that late! serious props.

@KayKay: Well, this is on the table since K's sleep has been good and I feel like it's a actually plausible, lol!

@snowjewelz: I shower at night to get the day's grime off me and if I work out in the morning I'd have to shower twice a day. So no. I've never had trouble sleeping due to exercising in the evening even though I've often read that could be a problem. I've been alternating the 3 levels of Jillian Michael's 30 day shred (to keep myself from becoming bored) and adding a run on the treadmill 1-2 times a week. I also have Insanity but that's way harder than the 30 day shred and also about 15 min longer.

DH and I have both always done our workouts at night. It's so much easier. And I think people who feel more alert after a workout are either insane or liars. It definitely helps me sleep.

Yes, DH and I usually work out at night after the LOs are in bed. We do this 2-3 times per week, sometimes alternating nights, sometimes taking turns on the same night. It doesn't usually interrupt my sleep, but when it does, I'm wideeee awake!

@PawPrints: It works both ways for me . . . if I workout in the morning (my current routine), I feel awake and ready. If I work out at night, once I'm under the covers and nice and toasty warm, I am out like a light!

I want to, because I can not get up any earlier than I already do, but it doesn't seem to happen.

I have taken night classes at the gym and I actually really love it. I am one of those who don't get the endorphin rush from exercise at all so after working out in the morning I am drained. But it's perfect at night!

I used to work out at the gym at 5:30 every morning, and I loved it. Then, we changed daycare, and I had to take over drop-off. The daycare doesn't open until 7 a.m., so my gym mornings were over.
Now, I do most of my workouts at night. I either go to the gym after bedtime (7 p.m.), go for a run RIGHT when I get home (5 p.m.) or do a youtube video at home. I don't love it as much as I loved the mornings, but I had to adapt to keep myself healthy.
I also sometimes go for a run outside during my lunch break at work.

I workout for 6:30-7:30pm in the evenings. My husband gets home from work at 6, so he watches our 2 boys while I go to the gym. Then I get home in time to help with bedtime.

@Boogs: Sorry for the late response, but I also find that it tires me out and helps me to sleep better. I think the shower afterwards helps me to wind down, and I'm out like a light! It might also help that one of my two kids will wake up at least once in the middle of the night
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@CastleGirl: Do you shower if you run during lunch break? And how come you're free RIGHT when you get home? Sry for the direct questions haha, totally just really curious about people's processes and trying to see what can work for me!
@aprild: That's a really nice set up!

When I do work out, I do it at night. It's the only time I have available and I am NOT a morning person. lol
