Okay, so here's the thing. We are having a baby girl in July and I want to call her Elliott. Elliott May to be precise.

I got it from a thread on here about unisex names and fell in love with it as soon as I saw it! DH likes it too - which, after weeks of discussion and vetoing each other's suggestions, was a pretty exciting development!!

I made the mistake of telling a couple of work colleagues that we were considering it. One of them said "I thought you were having a girl?" When I replied that I was indeed having a girl, the other work colleague exclaimed "I thought she said Elliott, too!! But you said Ellie, didn't you?". They were both completely appalled when I confirmed that they had heard me right the first time... because, apparently, Elliott is a boy's name....

Well I decided to write them both off as idiots and got over it pretty quickly (as is my way!) but then DH told someone he works with and her reaction was exactly the same. Well, actually, she did an ET impression first (what is WITH people???) then moved onto the "but it's a boy's name" line of attack. It has caused DH to worry about the name. He doesn't want our daughter to be bullied - and he doesn't want everyone to hate our child's name when we eventually share it.

I reacted to his concerns very maturely - I went in a mood!! But I have been thinking about it a lot and decided to Google "Elliott as a girls name UK". Well, the results are overwhelming - page after page of British people saying "Urgh, it's a boy's name" and "Do you want your daughter to be bulllied?" Oh and my personal favourite "Even Elliott in Scrubs was called that because her dad wanted a boy".

What do you think? Does it matter that the majority of my friends and family will hate my child's name? Does it matter that "it's a boys name"? And do you like Elliott for a girl?
