There are only two groceries stores where I live, a regional type and Walmart. I LOVE the service at the regional one...they have new/expectant mother parking spots and someone carries your groceries out to the car for you every time. I wouldn't have cared if I was single, but it's so nice once you have kids you don't have to load the car and then put your cart back!

But our grocery store will ask you if you need help taking it. It used to automatically take it out for you, but it was bought by a new chain and they switched to asking first.

YES! I love it! Not at Wal-Mart, but at the smaller regional chains, and they usually ask at some of the bigger supermarkets, especially if you're pregnant or wrangling young kids by yourself. It's awesome.

Service in the UK is generally dreadful - miserable staff who try to ignore you if they can and do as little as possible to help you!! But we are used to it - and are suspicious of anything better!

@Cherrybee: No tip, at least not in my area (Upper Midwest, USA). But the grocery stores that do it are either the nicer, more expensive supermarkets (not Whole Foods nice or anything, just nice for our area- average everywhere else), or the little tiny small town grocery stores where it probably makes more sense for them to run your groceries out and bring the cart back in, than it does to deal with carts left to sit out in the parking lot by customers.

I shop at trader joes and since I started showing, when I'm not with my husband, they always ask if I'd like help. I don't need it at this point, but it's nice that they ask

No, but my husband will take care of it if he's with me. And if he is home when I get home from the store he brings it in while I put it all away. It helps to get it done faster!

@Cherrybee: Nope! Where I am from, it is not the norm. I used to decline because it felt awkward...I can totally do it alone pre-kids. They actually have employees where their only job is to sack and take groceries to the car...if you decline, they insist!

Nope, but I could see how this would be nice during bad weather or after you grocery shop. I hate having to return the cart and lug DS and his carseat all the way back to the car. Because of this, I always look for parking spots near/next to cart wells.

Nope. There is also no "mother/baby" parking spots around here either.
When I lived in FL, Publix employees always offered to take my groceries out - but I noticed that wasn't a universal offer to all customers, so I always declined.

They offer but I say no. I wouldn't know what to do while they were loading my groceries!

When I was a kid, our local grocery store used to have a sort of "drive through" car loading service. After you bought your groceries they would be sent to the side of the building where you could drive up your car and people would put the groceries in to your truck for you. They stopped that service more than 12 years ago though.

Yes, I shop at Publix. They always offer. I almost always decline because I feel weird having someone do this for me. Plus, I normally spend a few minutes at my car rearranging my groceries in the bags and don't want them to think I'm crazy.

No--none of our markets offer this. We went to a market in Dh's hometown and they asked me--it was such a culture shock!

They always ask but I've never taken them up on it. Coming up on the last 2 1/2 months of pregnancy I just might!

Our small, local store does this, and I'm used to it because it's how I grew up. I love it! We even have the drive-up system @pui: mentioned.
These guys go above and beyond though (getting you an extra jug of water from across the store if you forgot, etc). They've always been helpful, and now that I'm pregnant, I'm surprised they even let me take the groceries off the shelf and put them in the cart on my own.

Yes! Another publix shopper in FL. They have offered and taken our groceries out for my entire life (as they have always offered this service even when my mom shopped there with me as a kid).
I used to decline but then a bagger once thanked me for accepting and said they really like the couple minutes they spend walking outside for fresh air and a change of scenery. Since then I accept, make a little small talk, and hope they enjoy the little "break". They are not allowed to accept tips for this service (and wear pins that at so!) but about once a year I go online and compliment my store to corporate and try to name any employees I see regularly. They're rewarded with a free publix sub if they're mentioned by name, so it's nothing big but at least something I can do to show my appreciation. -
Yep, at our local grocery store they take the groceries out to your car for you, they don't even ask! it's nice when I have the baby with me. Since they do it for everyone, there's no tipping. It's not a fancy specialty store or anything, just a small town grocery store.

Hahahaha....no. I'd love that though. The only places that offer services like that around here are Home Depot and Lowe's and that's only when you buy something humongous.

They often offer, but I've never accepted. If they offered to follow me home & carry them up the 4 flights of stairs into our apartment, THAT I would take them up on!

@mrs. bird: word! The hardest part is carrying them up the stairs at home with the kids. This is why I started getting groceries delivered and just doing small trips with the kids.

@matador84: @LemonLong: Yeah, where we live they don't really offer; they just do it. It was really strange to me at first, and I kept feeling that I should tip them, or grab the cart and run before they could start taking things out to the car. But now it's gotten to be a pleasant part of shopping. We know all the people at the store, and they know us, and we'll chat as they help us out (unless it's 500 below zero-- every man for himself, yo). They don't expect tips. And the one or two times I tried it was really uncomfortable and they wouldn't take it anyway.

Yes! I'm military so all of my grocery shopping is at the commissary. The baggers work only for tips, so ewe always tip as well.
