Most of the dermatologists I've called in NY don't take insurance.
Does yours?

Yes, I've gone to a few different ones over the years in NY and they take insurance!

Yes! Can you find one that is affiliated with a hospital or larger medical practice?

Yes, thankfully. I'm going tomorrow to have a mole removed.

@Silva: hmm i'm going to have to look harder. my original derm stopped taking my insurance. then my next one didn't take insurance, so i've been calling around since i really want to get my copious moles checked out. i'll just have to check with my insurance website to see who the participating providers are.
alas all the best ny dermatologists tend not to accept insurance.

Mine does but he doesn't really do cosmetic procedures. We just go for body checks and stuff like that. Around me (in NJ) none of the derms that specialize in cosmetic procedures, botox, etc take insurance.

Most of the derms I've been to will take PPO insurance. One of the reasons why I can't stand HMO is going for & waiting for referrals.

@mediagirl: I'm going in on Wednesday to get one removed! I'm scared though cuz I heard the word "incision" and "stitches"......>_< Can you reassure me after your experience? =P

@cranberryapple: I've had 3 removed, the first two were removed and tested but came back benign and the last came back cancerous so it had to be removed deeper (big scar) the benign removed moles didn't leave a trace after about a month.

@Mrs. Bee: that's really bizarre! My dad is a dermatologist and definitely accepts insurance. I hope you can find one that takes it..

To those who think it's weird or crazy, it's actually pretty common in the wealthy areas of big cities like NYC and LA for doctors to not take insurance (concierge medicine). I've never felt the need to go to one though.

I've been to a couple of derms in the Boston area and all have accepted insurance.

@mrsbee Mine takes insurance! She's on the UES, Dr Libby Buscemi. She also has a partner that I actually prefer but I can't remember her last name, Allison something. I have Oxford insurance and have been going there for 5 years!

Yup! But prescriptions drugs are still expensive even with insurance. Hubby said it's because they're not medically necessary. Makes sense I suppose....

Mine does and I love them! I found the practice years ago by searching on my insurance website. I always map out which office is most convenient - it's actually in the same building as all my other doctors.

Mine does, but it seems like I always end up having to pay extra...boo. Which reminds me that I'm way overdue for a mole check, boo again.
