Would she be driving LO anyway? I talked to my friend about this when she was deciding on emergency contacts. We kind of figured any emergency that would warrant the emergency contact taking the baby right away (ie, no time to get a car seat from somewhere) would probably require an ambulance, so it probably isn't a major concern about the car seat itself.
But if your mom will be driving her anyway, it might make things easier if you can find a good deal on one to keep in her car. I just know the car seats can be $$$.

No. DH and I both have one though so if we did have an emergency there is an extra carseat with one of us.

I leave our car seat at daycare in case they would need it, but my mom and his mom do not have one of their own. However they both of a converter car seat that she will be big enough for soon.

We have the Evenflo car seat from Amazon that is like $49.99 or something and it had great safety and reviews, despite the low price. Something like that would be affordable as a back up.

LO is still in her bucket seat, so that's easy to move around. When she's older I'll probably have my parents get an affordable one, especially since she'll be in it until preschool years! I'm sure in the next four years they'll need to drive her somewhere. If it turns out that they won't, I dunno. lol.

We have an extra carseat in our basement that we install for people who are helping for an extended period of time (when grandparents come to visit, a babysitter coming this whole week while I'm a single parent, etc) and our regular emergency contacts have a key to our house. So if they need to pick up Wagon Jr. they can stop at our house to pick up the carseat first.

Yup. Our emergency contact is a good friend of ours whose baby is a couple months older so they have their carseat they could put her in.

@mrs. wagon: That is a good idea. I think I will store the spare at MIL's house since she is close to daycare and our other contacts (BIL, SIL) and we all have a key to her house!

I don't have a LO yet, but I'm one of the emergency contacts for a good friend, and I do not have a car seat. However, she has an extra one and I have the ability to get the extra car seat should I ever need to.

My parents bought a convertible for their vehicles when my son was little, and now have a booster seat for my son in their car. It's pretty convenient when they're coming to get him for an overnight stay or whatever. It's also used by my niece when my brother's family comes to town. I'm guessing they'll get another convertible soon, now that another baby is on the way.
An extra carseat is rarely a bad idea.

Both grandma's have a carseat. MIL bought hers a few years ago when my niece started daycare as MIL took her once a week and didn't want to swap cars with SIL or fuss with moving it from car to car.
My mom and I have been watching flyers and she just picked up a pretty decent carseat for like $100 because it was on mega sale. It's not a nice as ours, but it is fine for short trips and makes it easier for Grandma to pick her up from daycare if she has the afternoon off (which I love!)

No, but she's still so little that her carseat stays with her. I'm not sure how we'll handle this when she transitions out of her infant seat.

@BAO - Is it this one?

I hadn't thought about doing this, but it may make sense for our in-laws to have one on hand in case they need to pick up LO.

He always takes his seat with him (he's 4m) so it's not an issue yet. But yes, when I go back to work, we will def leave a boost seat with my MIL! Or maybe we could leave it at the preschool so whoever it happens to be that picks him up and use it? I'd have to ask if they have space to store it.

@TurtleDoves: we thought about leaving the seat behind for whoever picked her up, but my mom isn't strong enough to install it tightly/properly in her car by herself which is why we decided to buy her one.

Yes, my mom has one. She has a convertible car seat for lo and an infant seat for my niece that she is a nanny for. She got it when she started nannying for my niece recently and it's so useful.
She knows she'll never be able to install the car seats so they stay in her van at all times.

yep. my parents bought one on their own -- so cute it's not the best car seat, but it works for when my parents need to pick him up (they've had to do so twice) or want to take him somewhere.
