Does your home have a basement, and do you feel a basement is necessary?

our current one does, and it was necessary because it's a townhouse and otherwise, it would just be too small.
But we're moving to a house built on a slab. In some ways, it's better than having a basement. The space we have is more usable since it's an open floor plan and all on one floor. We have a TV in the basement of our townhouse but never really use it.
And it will be so nice to not have to go up and down two flights of stairs to do laundry and get it put away.
I would only say it's "necessary" if I lived somewhere where it storms a lot

Yes, we do. We have a home on the small side and I like having a floor where we can watch tv at night and not worry about it disturbing the kids, and a place the kids can go to run around and play.
I think it depends on what your needs are.

Yes, we have one. I don't know if it's necessary, but we like having a place for storage that's out of the way (half the basement is finished, half is shelving). I don't think we'd purchase a new house without a basement because we are used to it now. When my parents moved to Texas they discovered that basements aren't as common there. They've just adjusted to using other space in the house/garage for storage.

Yes. It's unfinished and we prefer it that way. We like to have one to store random things (like tools) and for the cat litter boxes.
pineapple / 12793 posts
Yes we have one. It's necessary because of the climate. No frozen pipes please!
nectarine / 2086 posts
Yes we do. No garage bc we live in the city so it's very important for us to be able to store things down there.
clementine / 903 posts
Yes, our home does. It is considered necessary in my area of the country, regardless of whether I consider it necessary. Therefore, I would never buy a house without a basement due to challenges with potential resale.

yes and its nice to have
We store everything down there (holidays, outdoor furniture in the winter, clothes, etc)
We also have a TV room down there and a small gym set up
pomelo / 5298 posts
Nope. I grew up in the North with one, but here in the South, not so common.
honeydew / 7303 posts
Yes. The majority of its finished then we have a pretty large unfinished area that's for storage. Honestly we never use the finished part. We even have a full bath down there that never gets used.
pineapple / 12802 posts
Yes. It's almost unheard of where we live to not have a basement.
I do think ours is necessary, I do wish it were finished though.

No, we're in a townhouse, and we share a parking garage with two condo towers -- the garage is below our main level. We miss having a basement - the out-of-sight storage is great for seasonal stuff, luggage, etc.
clementine / 957 posts
Yes we have a basement. For us it's a necessity as we live in a ranch-style home. We have half of our basement finished as a living room/craft room. The other half is split between our laundry room and workbench/storage area. We have storage in the attic but it's much easier to get it from the basement, so most is stored down there.
grapefruit / 4089 posts
Ours does, but around here all houses have basements so I can't imagine not having one!
pomegranate / 3401 posts
Nope, we live in CA and I don't know anyone who has a basement here! I would like one for storage though....
pomelo / 5258 posts
I've never lived in an area that had a basement so I don't know the difference. It does bug me when DH's family comes to visit because they always talk about how our house would be just the right size if only we had a basement. I would never think to tell someone that their house would be right if they just doubled their square footage like it would cost nothing.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
Nope - they aren't very common in the UK at all! Growing up we always had one, but we lived in the Midwest where they are necessary; here, not so much.
honeydew / 7622 posts
Yes. It's 1000 sq ft and finished but not very well- uneven tile, low ceilings. We just use it for storage. One smaller room down there has outdoor entry- that's where we bring in the dogs when they are muddy. We also have a wine cellar. I don't think it's absolutely needed. But I love the extra space.

Ours has one, it is unfinished and very basement-y. Our laundry is down there and DH has a wood shop and stores his beer there as well. It flooded once so we don't really store much else there. I don't know if it is necessary, but I don't mind the extra space.

Nope, but I always wanted one as a kid. Thought they were so cool! lol

Yes - we have a walkout, finished basement (with an unfinished storage area). While it is nice to have the extra living space, I don't think basements are necessities!

The house we are buying has a partially finished walkout basement. It is pretty common around here to have a basement. It was high on our list of wants. We will probably completely finish it and use it as living space as our family grows. Our starter home had a nice little basement that we used as a den/tv room.

We have one but it's def not necessary. We barely use it so it's kinda wasted space. It is nice when we have lots of people over though b/c its wide open, has a bar and we have more seating down there and a play area too.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
Yes and I can't imagine not having one. The majority of homes here have them and it where we keep our pantry, some storage small gym and laundry. Ours is finished,
grapefruit / 4321 posts
No, they are very uncommon around here. I would love to have one for storage. Right now all of our storage is in the attic which is fine, it's plenty of space, it's just not as convenient to get things in and out of stoarge. I'm not looking forward to getting all the baby stuff back down!

Yes. It was finished when we bought it (and is half the square footage of our house). We used it for storage, laundry, play area, and extra guest room.. It flooded last week and is now unfinished. I'm super sad thinking about not being about to use it for the next 3-5 years as we save up money/slowly fix it. It's not a true necessity, but it's a great perk.

Yes, we have a finished basement. My FIL moved in with us and he lives down there, so that was one of our main requirements when we bought this house.

I didnt grow up with a basement, but we have one now and I kinda hate it.... We had 2 times the sump stopped working and it flooded... I hate going all the way down for laundry. We finished half of it and i still dont like hanging out down there. I almost prefer bringing my sewing machine upstairs to work on projects

@Chillybear: I wanted a house with a basement but not basement laundry!! I was dreading that but our house has 2nd floor laundry and that is not taken for granted.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Yes.. I live in the NE so most houses have basement. I mean, I don't care if there isn't one S long as I have extra room somewhere else within the house?

We had a basement at our old home and I hated every minute of it. So happy our second home doesn't have one.

@JoyfulKiwi: your insurance didn't cover the flood?
papaya / 10560 posts
We don't have one, but some of the older homes in our neighborhood do. The ones I've seen are completely finished.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
Nope. Not common here at all. My hometown is below sea level so definitely none there.
pear / 1809 posts
No, they aren't very common where I live. I don't think it's necessary either.
