@regberadaisy: gah! no! they said if it was caused by a burst pipe or hole in the roof or leaking washing machine they would have covered it, but rain coming up from the ground/through the foundation was not. I was like "Why do we pay you again?"

Yup! Living in the Midwest they are a necessity. Ours is a finished basement with a full bathroom and a walk out office. I love having that space to watch movies/tv after J goes to bed and we don't have to worry about waking him up!

Yep! We had it finished around Ds' first bday, we both love the extra storage room, play area, theatre space, half bath and pool table/bar area!

No, they are practically nonexistent here, but I'd love one! My friend in Germany has one that's divided into a laundry room and a spare bedroom/office. I love it.

@MusicaV: We have a full unfinished basement. Eventually we will finish it. I love having a basement, the extra sq footage is great for storage, and just living in general.
I don't know if it's necessary, but it sure is handy! Everyone I know who doesn't have a basement complains about not having one.

Yes, and a full basement was on my must-have list when we were house hunting. Sure we could get by without one but having one is really awesome. Half of it is a gym/laundry room and the other half a playroom. We spend a ton of time down there regardless of the season.

Nope. Most homes around here doesn't have one and the ones that do all seem to have a problem with water coming in when it rains heavily.

No, I don't think they're common at all in CA.

Here in the Midwest, every home has one! Our old home had a very cellar like basement, couldn't finish it if you wanted to...but it was storage, a laundry space, and our storm shelter.

Our current home has great sized basement that was "finished" when we moved in...but we gutted it and are in the process of finishing it off right now. It will have a bar/kitchen area with a pool table and an extra living space. Laundry is also down there, the litter boxes, and an extra bathroom. Is it a necessity? Ummm, in my opinion, yes...It is great for the storms, the storage, and the huge value it adds to your house.

We live in NY. We have a finished basement (and 2nd kitchen) as well as a full attic. We love the extra storage space and we hope to make it an in-law suite/play space now that we are pregnant with #2 (and only have a 3 bedroom house).

We have an unfinished basement, and I rarely go down there. I mostly use the attic for storage. It would be too costly to finish it properly, and I have an old house with a lot of other issues to address

Yes, we do, and personally, I'm not sure how we would live without one. Because it's the norm in our area, I would think it would be weird to have the water heater, HVAC, and water softener in places other than the basement. Plus, it's our main storage area as well.

Our house has a basement and I'd be lost without it! It's not finished, but we use it for laundry, our exercise equipment, a second fridge/freezer and general storage.

We do! I grew up in a home with a basement and it's where we spent most of our time (the family TV room was down there) so I was excited to buy a home that had one. Right now we don't use it much, other than big events and when doing work (our offices are there) but I imagine it will be great when the kids are bigger.

yes and yes! Our first home didn't have a basement and it was on our must list for house #2. I like having room to grow and storage space.

We have a basement and it was a requirement for us. We have a 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bedroom house, but we want 2-3 children and still wanted an area for an office and guest room. Plus I like having the laundry area down there and we can make a playroom, plus we store our out of season clothing in closets.
