My job is OK and I enjoy going to work for the social aspect. I also really like the satisfaction I get from being good at it, but it's certainly not my dream job. I work in insurance and it pays the bills without making me hate my life! Lol!

I feel the same! I enjoy it in that I excel at it and I like having a professional work life. I'm in the midst of the next step in my career path and while I'm definitely not one who "loves" their job, I do find happiness in my career.

It's boring at times, but I think I prefer boring to stressful. I really like the people I work with and have a great work-life balance because they're so flexible. So overall it's great.

Nope. It is a job. And most of the time quite boring. But overall I like working.

@prettylizy: patenting not parenting lol!!! Patent law sucks
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@blackbird: omg lol! Well I have no frame of reference for patenting but it sounds dull
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@prettylizy: hahahaha! What kind of person says parenting with a 2 year old is boring?! Lmao! I evaluate applications for patents based on technical merit. It's tedious and repetitive and ass kissy and I hate it more than my last position, and that's pretty depressing.
I have balls in motion to go into Physician Assistant program, though. Need to see how I feel at the end of the year after having T

Hmmmm...I find my job very satisfying although it's frustrating at times and is very rarely boring. I love that I am out of my classroom at 2:35 and that it's really conducive to having a family. To say it fulfills me or is my "dream job" is a stretch. My faith and family fulfill me. I am sure there are other jobs out there that would be my dream job but I am happy doing something that helps others.

@prettylizy: I'm basically where you are with your job with mine - ok, nice people, not my dream, pays the bills/loans. But I am also on the exec board of an animal shelter and THAT I love spending my time on.
grapefruit / 4663 posts
I love the extremely flexible company I work for and the people I work with, I like the fact that I can probably buy-in in the next 5 years. It doesn't fulfill me but I like it enough. I think I'd be fulfilled by teaching or midwifery but I'm not willing to go back to school

The parts of my job that are working with children are extremely fufilling. However, I have surprisingly little actual interaction with children (maybe 2 hrs a week, the rest is planning programming with/programs for children) and that just isn't as fufilling/meaningful as the actual time with the kids. I'm starting a new job with much more children interaction soon so I'm hoping I find it more fufilling!

So much. I get to help small business owners and it's amazing to help others grow and understand things that they thought were impossible to understand.
papaya / 10560 posts
It really does. I have had several conversations with my friends about my job, and they have commented to me before that they "wish" they had a job where they were making a difference and/or being fulfilled.
I've always worked in high poverty settings and it is very fulfilling to navigate people out of poverty through education and resources that I can help direct them to.

@blackbird: I ised to work for someone who is a patent attorney - the person that writes those patents! I thought it sounded excruciating but he loved it!
No, I work to put myself through school right now. But my future career will hopefully be very fulfilling

It's fufilling in many ways. I have minor complaints but overall have it pretty good at work

@mrsjyw: this. EXACTLY. I like work, in the middle of needing to take the next step. I hope to build it to something that fulfills me, job-wise.

Yes, very much! I haven't been bored in the almost 5 years I've been here. I teach, tutor, and work on curriculum for a career college. The students and adult interaction keep me inspired and working hard and it is covering material that I am passionate about. This job is my career soul mate even better, I get to change students' lives.

It's interesting and varied enough, I like my colleagues & I get to help people, so it's satisfying.

Yes, I love my job and I'd like to think that the work i do makes a difference.

Mine is fulfilling because I know that some aspects of what I do can actually help people. I also like my job. I'm self-employed and I find it fulfilling to be my own boss.

I think my job fills a need I have, which is to exercise my brain, think logically and solve problems. One of my favorite things to do is research why something behaves a certain way.
It also surrounds me with people that I might not come across in my day to day life. I've worked with people from all over the world!
kiwi / 566 posts
@lemondrop: Love seeing that there are "career soul mates" out there! Can't wait to find mine! My mom is in a similar job--after 30 years or so of unfulfilling jobs she's finally in her dream job; I hope it doesn't take me that long though!
eggplant / 11824 posts
My job fulfills my need to exercise my brain hard on a daily basis. It involves a lot of research, a lot of writing/drafting, and complex problem solving. I also do a lot of project management stuff too, and public speaking to both large and small groups, which I enjoy. I work for a very honest, generous and supportive company and my small team is made up of all high achievers which pushes me personally (which I like, as I hate to be bored). My job is also ever-changing, which I like too. I never know what issues and problems will come to our team, and what I'll need to solve.

Not at all. I hate my job right now. It's high stress, and the work itself is boring. But I'm concerned about getting a new job. In my current industry, you're expected to work long hours. I've been at my job for a long time so I have the flexibility to leave "on time." If I leave my industry I'd take a big pay cut. I don't know what to do.
pomegranate / 3355 posts
@prettylizy: not at all. I work in insurance/claims. And quite frankly it's the opposite. I am good at what I do and I get paid well to do it. But the things I deal with on a daily basis are honestly draining. However, my job allows me many freedoms I wouldn't have without it sooooo I get my fulfillment from those types of things and of course my "non" work life is very fulfilling!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Mrs. Pen: I have coworkers who love it, but holy shit, is it eye-gouging for me. My eyes just glaze right over. It doesn't help that my case load is dropping as I get closer to maternity leave, and will soon be at zero, so I'm also incredibly bored (both because the subjects are boring and also because there's little to do 95% of the time). I really struggle not being engaged
honeydew / 7504 posts
No. Which is really really sad to me because I'm a social worker and that job is "supposed" to be fulfilling. I chose health care social work because it was what really interested me. But it turns out that all I do is discharge planning. Sometimes it feels like I went to school for 6 years and got a Masters degree to spend much of my day making copies and faxing charts.
I'm looking into something else, but I'm not sure what that would be. In a perfect world, I'd work at Planned Parenthood or another similar agency. But I'd take a HUGE salary cut to do so and there are times when we struggle financially as it is...
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
Yes, definitely. I teach but more specifically I work in small groups with struggling readers. It's all the good parts of teaching without a lot of the negatives. I wish I got paid more, but thankfully DH makes a LOT more than me so that makes up for it.
grapefruit / 4770 posts
Yes, I believe in my agency's missions and I like that my work directly helps people. However, the area of law is boring, and not what I want to practice.
watermelon / 14467 posts
Parts of it are interesting, but there are parts that make me want to gouge out my eyeballs in boredom. I do a lot of the same thing, just for different events. It's okay, but I think I'd like meteorology better. I just don't want to completely start over with schooling.
nectarine / 2521 posts
Yes. I honestly have the best of both worlds in that I get to stay home and only work 2 days a week for a great boss. While there are crushing lows and big highs in my work, I like that I'm helping people and feel I'm making a difference - which is the reason I got a Psychology degree in the first place.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Not really. I had a lot more ambition when I was younger. Also at my old job I was A LOT closer with my coworkers so it made work life more fulfilling. Now after 2 years at my company now I still don't really feel it, plus after having a baby, work really is just a paycheck... I really rather SAH!

@prettylizy: I'm a teacher, and I love my job. It absolutely fulfills me.
Some days it drives me crazy, or I don't want to go... but that's with any job.
I can't envision myself doing anything else, until we have kids and I become a SAHM, which is my ultimate dream job!

By all accounts, I have a good career. For the past few years I've worked for small tech startups (rather than big tech companies) -- it's mentally challenging work that requires creative problem-solving, and I get to work with super smart, passionate people. And it pays well. But, it's so male-dominated, so anti-work-life balance (the companies I've worked for vocally pride themselves on a lack of work-life balance). In my current company, I am the sole female employee -- and, that can sometimes be lonely. Since becoming pregnant, I literally have to remind myself why I should love it: I'm helping build a company and product from scratch, I'm challenged daily, and by some small measure, what our company does helps people. But, I'm in a funk where I just don't live, breathe, love this stuff anymore. Anyway, I find myself naturally focusing on the negatives. But, my salary is far greater than my husband's and I'm not willing to jeopardize our current financial comfort to switch careers. Besides, I'm not even sure what else I'd do!

Mostly! Ask me around Independence Day and I may say differently. Lol. My job offers a lot of freedom. I'm not stuck doing one thing everyday. I have a lot of creative input at work and that fulfills me. I grew up in and have a passion for the park I work at so I genuinely love seeing it succeed.

@WinterBee: This is how I feel about teaching, too. I would like, someday, to do something more specialized in curriculum and planning but I feel like I need to put more years in and I am not sure what it would be. I considered becoming an instructional coach but decided against it.
