Purely hypothetically, this may be happening right now. What amazes me is that saying anything usually backfires. The best bet is usually to say nothing and wait for her to calm down and/or just fall back asleep.
Does your kid ever do this?

Yep! Very rarely at home, but just happened an hour ago. We're at ils first home visiting family and he passed out from partying hard w his cousins then woke up inconsolably crying. Me talking or rubbing his back made more tears. He finally calmed down after he let me pick him up after five minutes and then passed out again when I laid him down again.

Yes; this rarely happens at home but happened our first night on vacation. Nothing we said helped, she just cried harder. I took her hands and held them and kept telling her to "belly breathe" (from Sesame Street - take a deep breath) and she did and finally calmed down enough for me to hold her and cuddle her. She sighed and said "oh! That was a big cry!" And then fell back asleep.

Yes. My (now) 2.5 year old had what I think were night terrors 3-4 times during our move. Picking her up or talking to her made them worse. Besides crying she also would shriek things that didn't make sense, or just Mommy! mommy! <scream> over and over. Eventually it passed as quickly and suddenly as it started. It seemed to be brought on by over tiredness and new places.

Yeah that sounds like night terrors. We've only had it happen once. It's scary because they don't respond to anything...but they're not really awake.

Multiple times. But it might just be because she's hungry and wants to nurse

We had this happen a few weeks ago! It was so spooky. She kept asking for me and I was right there! She was so worked up. I had to take her out of bed and watch a few episodes of max and ruby with her. It worked. Haha.

Yes. Once I tried to wake him but he didn't even know I was there. I assume it's a nightmare or terror, crawl into bed with him and hold him, whispering to him that I'm there and I love him and stroking his back. Normally he calms back down (into a deep sleep!) quickly.

Yeah. It's probably night terrors or nightmares. DS does this sometimes, and for the first 10 minutes talking to him is completely pointless because he doesn't seem fully awake and it doesn't really calm him down. Then he calms down, and usually decides it's time for breakfast and toys Takes a while to talk him out of that if it happens to be 3 AM!

It sounds like night terrors which are common. One thing that has worked for two kids I've worked with in the past (very young sister and friends kid) was to take them potty. No talking etc just on the pot and off. My son hasn't had them (yet) but if he gets ansy at night it seems to correlate to needing to pee or a super full diaper that needs to be changed.

Yes all the time, both of them. We've learned to let them work it out on their own (it just gets worse if we go in) unless it lasts for more than a few minutes. It SHOCKS me when people tell me their kids sleep all night without waking up or crying. That's never been the norm for us.

Yes! And talking to them is no good. I've read that it's night terrors. Usually from being overtired before bed.
