Oh this is a good question! We are only apartment hunting right now, but have been talking a lot about how much we value an extra space for a play room. I have the same concerns that even if we have one, we'll end up in the living room anyway (that's what we did growing up, but the LR was right in the center of the house and my mom always wanted us to play in the finished basement).

We have a bar room off our downstairs family room that is half adult play room half kid play room. We put her train table and toys in there, and an area rug over the tile so she has a soft spot. I like that I can tidy the toys into their own corner without it having to be in my personal living space. We plan on putting a gate up so she can't get behind the actual bar.

We just moved into a house with a playroom and we use it all the time! the kids' rooms are upstairs and they have nice big bonus room im between that we set up as a playroom. I do have one bin of toys downstairs in the living room, but for the most part we're upstairs playing, not downstairs, anyway.

We don't. Several good friends (one with 2 under 2, one with 2 year old triplets) turned their formal dining rooms into gated-in playrooms. It's nice to visit and I totally understand the appeal, but I think I'm too minimalist to have a whole room full of toys.
Maybe I'll be singing a different tune as LO gets older and/or we add more kids to the mix!!

Our formal living room is her playroom. All kid stuff is kept there so the rest of our house is toy free...I like it that way. It's still a work in progress...I'm most excited for her to get a play kitchen for her birthday this fall. I painted the train table with white board paint so when she gets older she can draw all over the top of it

Lala's room is essentially our playroom since she doesn't sleep in there

We have a 2-bdrm apartment. The kitchen, living and dining areas are one big open plan space. So, our kiddo will be lucky to snag a play nook in the living room.

@autumnlove: ours was unused before we had LO...my husband called it the "Christmas tree room" bc that's all we used it for. You should do it..your girl would love it I'm sure

DD's play area is part of the family room. Technically, it's the area in back of the couch, but it's now basically the whole of the 2nd floor since it's an open space.

Blogged mine a bit ago. Looooove it. Some toys end up elsewhere but the bulk of them stay in there and it is awesome.

@mrskc: you mean the large table with the 2 drawers? That was a hand me down from my BFF...and she got it from a family friend. I know Pottery Barn Kids has a train table kind of like that and maybe Toys R Us would have a similar table. Or look on Craigslist for train tables...the other side of ours has a landscape (green, blue, grey) that can be used as a train/car backdrop.
If you mean the small white table with colored chairs, my mom got LO this from Toys R Us. She loves it...she does her crafts/play dough at the table

Nope and I would be shocked if we ever had a place large enough for a playroom while she's still little. We live in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment now!

I wish we had a playroom/area! Our family room is just too small! Our formal living room is also mainly un-used, but it's the first thing the front door opens up to, and I can't stand the idea of it just being ALL kid stuff and toys as soon as you open the door. No walls either, so it'd just look messy.

@shopaholic: you just described our house! Right when you walk in, there's this empty area that is unfurnished, so it somehow ended up being the "playroom", but it's just toys scattered everywhere and I hate that it's the first thing I see right when I walk into our home.

Once J gets to be toddler-aged, we're going to have J & N share a room... and one of their current rooms will probably become a playroom.

@shopaholic: haha so true. a lot of things bit me in the butt after i had kids that i just didn't think about as a singleton! le sigh.

@Mrs. High Heels: this was in the morning...after breakfast so LO actually did play in there while I made breakfast. She mostly plays with her books and reads in the morning so it's super easy to straighten up. I always try to clean up with my LO before we leave the house (we leave the house every morning after breakfast), before naptime, and before bedtime...that way she will get used to doing it.
@shopaholic: Our playroom is actually in the front of the house too...but it doesn't bother me that it's the first thing people see...they can also see the dining room and the entry to the kitchen/den. It actually really motivates me to keep things tidy. I think it's helpful to have a "home" for everything so you know where things are put away...not only does it make it easier to clean up but my LO knows where things go too and can help clean up.
I much prefer a dedicated play area in the front of the house where we don't spend a ton of time with guests...our guests usually hang out in the kitchen/dining/den area at the back of the house and it's toy free. I also like that LO is on the same floor as me (lots of friends have their play room in an upstairs bonus room) so I can easily peek in on her while I'm cooking.

So here is our play area. It's actually just an area behind our couch. I think the room was meant for a formal living and dining but we just use it as our living room. @shopaholic: @Mrs. High Heels: ours actually is right at the front door. It doesn't bother me though.

@mrskc: love that!!! And I actually love how your toy bins/shelves and rug are "adult-like" and not childish, because it matches the house and doesn't scream "kids live here!!"
