Nope, we don't have a dedicated playroom. We have two smaller play areas, one in the living room and one in the family room. It wasn't on our list when house hunting.

yes, its where the formal living room is suppose to be - we aren't formal so its now a playroom.
nectarine / 2878 posts
We turned our formal dining room into a play room. We are hoping to move soon and a dedicated playroom is on my list!
honeydew / 7091 posts
@lilyann: We did the same.
Our house came with a formal dining room - I am so not formal enough for that! It makes a much better playroom

We renovated so that we have a open floor plan so the dining, kitchen and living are all one big space.
I do want the kids to have a homework area when they're school aged though.

@swurlygurl: same same! We have a small formal dining room that is somewhat enclosed and really easy to gate up. We have no formal dining room furniture so immediately turned it into the playroom!
It's awesome because you can see it from the kitchen or the living room and keeps all her toys corralled in one area.

My LO is still on the way but no we won't have a designated play room besides her actual room/nursery. Growing up my brother and I played in our rooms so I didn't even know people had separate playrooms until hearing about it on HB.
bananas / 9118 posts
No, our house is just big enough for a room for each and we spend most of the time in the living room.

No, most of his playing is done in our living room and we don't have a separate family room. He also sometimes plays in his bedroom, especially with his train table.

We have an unfurnished family room that is our playroom for bigger toys right now. We need some furniture!
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@regberadaisy: Same. We have an open floor plan which I like because it allows me to keep an eye on the kids while they are playing.
I would really like to have a big finished basement room when we move someday, though. A multi-purpose room that could store all the toys!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I have a raised ranch, the playroom is on the "ground" level and the rest of the house is upstairs. The playroom contains all of my son's toys, plus a TV watching area and our desks.
I have no problem with him being on a different level than I am, i can watch him on the Foscam anyway.
watermelon / 14467 posts
Nope. I one day hope to have a living room and a family room, with our office area and the bigger toys being in the family room.
pineapple / 12793 posts
Eventually (hopefully in the next six months) we'll have the rec room finished in the basement. It'll be play room/media room.

They did until #3 came along lol! We might have the girls share a room in a year or so...then we can have a playroom again. We just have so many toys everywhere in the house! The kitchen, great room, loft, their bedrooms (that one is the worst...naps don't happen because of it).

@lilyann: @swurlygurl: @Ginabean3: Same! We unintentionally turned that space into their playroom since we never used it for dining anyway.
coconut / 8234 posts
Nope. Don't have the space for that. Our entire apartment is her playroom.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
No. We have considered having the girls share a room & turning DD1 s room into a toy room but DD2 won't even be here until April & we are working on plans for building on eventually so we'll see what happens. I like sleeping g so nobody is sharing any sleeping space with the or sister until everyone is good at the whole sleeping thing! lol

@regberadaisy: yes, its called our house. her stuff has taken over every square inch less our master bedroom and bath.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
No, but that's definitely near the top of the list when we build. Right now my living room looks like a preschool.

Yes, I absolutely love our layout now. We just bought this house over the summer and they had a room off of the main living room that they called a sunroom. It has a lot of windows and a slider, but it's not really a sunroom. It is perfect as the playroom. I love that I have a safe place for him to play and a place where the giant mess of toys can live. It was torture spending time at my parents' last weekend because he wanted to crawl around and explore (including the stairs) and we kept having to reign him in and he'd get upset.
ETA - It's hard to explain our layout. In this pic I was standing in the kitchen and you see the livingroom with an open doorway to the playroom on the right.
honeydew / 7586 posts
No. We have an open floor plan. He has a play nook between the living room and kitchen.
pomelo / 5660 posts
@oliviaoblivia: that's what we have! Half our basement is the media room and the other half is the playroom. It works out great!
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
Yup, but we just lucked out. We bought our house pre-kids and didn't put much thought into the layout, but it all works!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
DH's office is right off the living room. Half of it is her playroom. Once we finish the basement, DH will move into the basement.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
No dedicated playroom, but he has toys in the living room, office, and his bedroom. His bedroom is plenty big enough to double as a playroom.
nectarine / 2079 posts
Yes. It is on the smaller side, but enough to keep her stuff in a contained area.
pomegranate / 3890 posts
nope but the lving room is really big, so most of his toys are in there but we still have more then enough room for all the adult stuff too. I like it because I can see the kids from the kitchen.
pomegranate / 3706 posts
Yes! We just made them one out of my former studio, after I sold my business a couple of weeks ago! Before then, their main play space was the living room. I have to say, I love having a space that's theirs, and no toys in the living room anymore.
pomelo / 5720 posts
Yes! It's supposed to be a sitting room I guess but we never used it until we made it into a playroom for DS. I love having all of his toys out of our LR.
pear / 1812 posts
Nope. The house is her play room. Her toys are primarily in a small area behind the couch with a playmat and her kitchen, as well as her room.
nectarine / 2784 posts
Mine won't, and I didn't either growing up... we just played in our bedrooms or the living room, and cleaned up after.
persimmon / 1343 posts
Nope, her play area is the living room. We -could- use our spare/guest bedroom as a playroom but it doesn't make sense to me to spend all that time up there instead of where everything else is, and that room is really small compared to our living room.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
We will, sort of, once we move into our new house TOMORROW! We'll be using the conservatory as a play room, it will also double as another dining room when we have large family gatherings, but its main purpose will be as a playroom. Cannot wait for the girls to have their own place to play!
pomelo / 5258 posts
Nope, she plays in the living room. I didn't even think of it when house hunting since that would have been out of our price range. I think I only knew one family that had a playroom growing up.
