My last name does. Both my maiden and my married last names actually...it gets annoying after a while!
pomelo / 5791 posts
Mine is also simple, and I ALWAYS get different versions of it. Like with an "e" or "a" added to the end for no reason.

I have a pretty unusual three syllable name and people always need help pronouncing it. I can usually tell when they are about to call my name at the doctor's office or when I was in school, because they start to look stressed out.

Yes; even though my name is not kreatyvly spelled and is (IMO) straight forward; the vast majority of the time it is mispronounced to the male version of the name. It’s so frustrating; even after I correct people they will continue to mispronounce it.
When picking names for LO, I wanted a name that was really, really straight forward.

I get the occasional smart alec who pronounces my name Lind-SAY instead of Lind-SEE but mine is super easy to pronounce.
pomegranate / 3516 posts
Kind of. My name is Molly and I get called Holly a lot (I guess when they have trouble hearing me or someone else). But if they see it on paper, it's never a problem.
coconut / 8305 posts
When I was in school, even college, most instructors didn't even attempt it. There would be a long pause during roll & I would know it was me. Lol. Mispronounced & misspelled often!
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
Surprisingly, it does. My name is Katilyn. They typical spelling is KatITlyn. So i've gotten called "Katie-lyn" quite a few times.
I go by "Kati", so people pronounce that "Kat-eye". Which drives me nuts lol

Yes. I had to correct my teachers all the time. Now my first and last name do.
honeydew / 7235 posts
YES - my last name (married last name) is impossible to pronounce without some instruction. sigh....
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
My maiden name did all the time. My first name, sometimes. It is a common name, just spelled differently. When I worked for a company with a lot of British and Swedish employees, they never said it right.

My name doesn't get butchered per se, but I am particular about how I like it pronounced. My first name is Megan.
I prefer (and the proper way) is Meg-anne, just like it is spelled (oh hey imagine that). For some reason, people like to say May-gun, which annoys the hell out of me. Why would you say that!! Is it spelled like that????
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@MrsTiz: kat-eye??? Seriously people?! I'd be so annoyed! haha!
My first name is common and easy to pronounce. People always mis-pronounced my maiden name though. Can't blame them since there's two O's so it's natural for them to make the "oooo" sound.
pomelo / 5257 posts
Absolutely. It is four letters and one syllable, but people pronounce it wrong regularly and almost always spell it wrong. I don't really care, though. Unless it's someone I will interact with a lot, I rarely correct them (like if the nurse pronounces it wrong at the doctor's office I just let it go).

People always mistake me for Audrey when its actually Aubrie, sometimes I don't even correct them especially if its an elderly person...
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
My name is very straight forward, but I still have people say the wrong name some times-- most of the time from people who are hispanic or African American, so I think they might use the other name for a girl more often, where I've mostly heard the wrong name for a boy. My maiden name got mispronounced all the time-- there are two common ways to say it, and even though it's quite common and I've never met someone who uses the hard E sound in it, there is a university with the name that pronounces is that way. My new last name is an actual work and impossible to mispronounce when you see it.

@Medianaranja - That's interesting! I've never met a Megan (of any spelling) that's pronounced Meg-ann. I've always heard Meg-un!

Yep. First and last name are always pronounced incorrectly, even though they're basically phoenetic. But my first name is 3 syllables and my last name is 4, must just be too many syllables for people's brains to deal with.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
Nope, it's pretty standard. I'm always blown away when people ask me how to spell Liz.... seriously?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
I've never had a problem with my first name, but my last name is always pronounced incorrectly. I generally don't correct people though because I don't really care enough. When I introduce myself, I give people the correct pronunciation, but if they just see my name in writing, they tend to pronounce it wrong. Oh well!
pomegranate / 3244 posts
@LindsayInNYC: That's basically what I meant, heh. It's just the May-gun that drives me bonkers!

I have a super simple last name (Long) but we always have to spell it because people tend to hear it as "Wong". It was especially bad when DH lived in San Francisco, people would always be confused by this 6 foot 1, red headed "Wong".
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Yup. Korea. First name. Long Polish last name. 'Nuff said. Ironically. Ppl have a harder time with last name than first name.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
Nope--my first and last names are common and easy to pronounce...thank goodness!
honeydew / 7916 posts
My last name. It's soooo short and only a few letters, but no one can seem to hear it correctly! Even when I spell it out, people mishear that too and add all kinds of weird letters.
persimmon / 1180 posts
People have a hard time spelling and saying my last name. I'll be honest though, I didn't know how to pronounce it when I first saw it either.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
My first name is one letter from a males first name, so every first day of school, or first time someone sees my name I am the male version of the name, only in university 2nd year spanish (elective, lol) class did the prof get it right the first day, first time in my life!
My maiden name was easy, and I thought married name was too, but it is so funny when people don't know it and try to say it, they say the "i" like and "l" and it's funny.
coconut / 8279 posts
@MediaNaranja: @LindsayInNYC: same! Though there's quite an Irish population around these parts and they all pronounce it "May-gun". And it's most commonly spelled, "Meaghan" here.
apricot / 423 posts
yep, my last name. it's four letters and one syllable. pretty straightforward, but people mispronounce it half the time, and hesitate in pronouncing the other half of the time. really?? at least when it's mispronounced, it's always the same mispronunciation.
pomelo / 5321 posts
Yes! My name isn't hard to pronounce at all but people get really confused when they see it. It's not a super common name but it's not off the wall either. Most people spell it with a -y ending but mine ends in -ee. I guess that throws people off.
pear / 1787 posts
Yes. My first name is Andrea and there are several ways to pronounce it so whenever I meet someone I have to direct them, and they usually forget. But I'm used to it, so no biggie.
I changed my last name when I got married--it's a simple, short name, but not very common, so I always have to spell it out. People often spell it wrong even when I do that. And, it always gets pronounced wrong.
coconut / 8430 posts
My name is super straightforward and easy, but there is an alternate spelling that is common, so sometimes I get asked about that. DH has the most difficult name to pronounce... Some of our friends still say his name wrong! Part of the problem is that we don't have one of the sounds in English so it's hard for people. When I need to tell people on the phone what his name is I always say "let me spell it for you..."
eggplant / 11716 posts
My maiden name and my first name are two of the most common American names in existence. When people can read it, they don't have trouble pronouncing it, unless Spanish is their first language, and then they have trouble pronouncing the A sound. But my married last name...sigh. Just sigh. It looks easy enough in English, except its not an English name, so it's pronounced totally different than it looks on paper.
Kind of like a Vietnamese student I had once whose first name was "Duong". Looks like "Doo-ong" in English, right? Except in Vietnamese, it's close to the sound of "yoong". There's no way an English speaker will get that right. And that's how it is with my new last name. I work in a school. so my name is printed all over the place, so I just answer to everything, how it looks like its pronounced, how it's actually pronounced, and my maiden name, all three.

Surprisingly, yes. lol. My name is simple and common and somehow people manage to misspell and mispronounce it constantly.
