My almost 5 yo son goes to full day daycare and, in the last month, he has already ripped holes in the knees of two pairs of pants. I don't sew and we don't even own an iron, so I will likely not patch them up. I'm on the hunt for new cheap pants.
Does your child wear out their pants quickly? What style of pants do you send them to school in (jeans, sweats, chinos, leggings, etc.)?

My DS is the same way! He wont wear jeans or khakis - so its all fleece or sweatpants material - I always overbuy because I know he goes thru them quickly

The kids wear these over their pants during outdoor play. These thinner ones for fall/spring and the thicker ones for when it's a bit colder. We haven't had any holes at all thanks to them.

@SugarplumsMom: we have pants like that that we leave at school, but so far it hasn't been cold enough to have the kids put them on before they go outside. I agree that they help though! I think my son plays on his knees on the floor a lot and that contributes to the wear.

@lamariniere: yes, the industrial strength carpets do wear on the knees of pants a lot. I'm trying to think of other ways you could iron on a patch. I mean, you could hand sew a patch, its not that hard and wouldn't take too long.

LO's jeans always survive no problem, but the knees on leggins get worn out pretty quickly.

I put my son in pants, he doesn't like jeans...but yes, we get a lot of holes and I am not willing (at least now) to get him the Lands End Iron knee pants (they're reinforced).

I don't think school is the culprit; my son manages to shred his shorts and pants and we home school. 
I turn the pants into cut-offs when the knees rip and toss the shorts after they're truly destroyed (frayed edges are no big deal to me for play clothes). Most of his pants and shorts are khakis or similar.

Yes. Leggings and pants. The other day I sent her in a semi-new pair of indigo pants it took me a month to find (elastic waistband, long enough legs, soft). Two wears in, hole in knee. She is getting a patch on those pants, I just have to find one.

Oddly enough, no. DS is almost 3 and goes to daycare and I don't think he's ever worn out a pair of pants. And he has a lot of hand me downs from my friends' kids. Maybe this is just something I have to look forward to!

Maybe try Lands End, I don't have experience but they market "Iron Knee" pants...

@lamariniere: My brother went through pants like it was his job between the age of 4-8. My mom bought him a lot of jeans and double-kneed pants, and she used a lot of iron-on patches.

@mediagirl: ugh, I feel you. One of the pants with holes was a recent purchase and had been worn less than 10 times. Booo.
Maybe I should invest in an iron so I can patch the pants...

@lamariniere: I buy cheap carters pants for school. That way if he destroys them it doesn't cost a fortune to buy new ones.
