For those of you who take/took public transportation when you were pregnant, did you find there were many people who did NOT offer their seats up to you? I take the subway every morning to pilates class, and only ONE person has ever offered their seat to me.
This morning, there were 4 separate women seated on the train who clearly saw my pregnant belly and just sat there staring. I actually prefer to stand when riding the train but I have to say, I'm shocked by how many inconsiderate people there are in this city. End rant. Sorry, had to get that off of my chest ;P

Oh man - I know what you mean! NORMALLY, people in Toronto are very gracious and give up their seats to elderly people, or people with children, etc. but I found during rush hour they do not. When I was 35 weeks pregnant, I was on a crowded subway and nobody gave up their seat. I was fuming because I really was tired and hot and out of breath. I saw that people were avoiding eye contact with me.

I really don't get this. When I worked in DC, I ended up giving up my seat to pregnant women here and there when I noticed no one else was doing so. I mean, do they just not understand that you're carrying an extra 30+lbs and are miserable?

It's interesting because the bigger I get, the less seats I get offered! I always eventually get a seat on the train--after a few stops when someone finally decides to be nice--and it's usually a woman who gives me a seat. I think men have only offered me seats about 4 or 5 times, and I take public transportation at least twice a day every day.

I've never been offered a seat either. It's always lovely when my 7 month pregnant self is struggling to keep my 3 year old from falling over on a crowded train and some 19 year old guy is sprawled out over 3 seats.

@EloiseKE: That is just awful! I always offer my seat to pregnant or the elderly. We were at the airport and this poor woman was holding her toddler's hand, pregnant, and rolling 3 suitcases all while the little boy was screaming his head off. I started walking towards her to offer to roll her luggage to her terminal when an older gentleman approached her and offered. She was so relived. At least 20ppl were watching her struggle

when I used to ride the bus I would offer my seat to people who looked like they needed to sit such as old people or women carrying an infant. I would hesitate with pregnant women because some women look pregnant but arent, and I didnt want to put my foot in my mouth.

We have special designated seats on the train for handicapped, elderly and pregnant women. Lots of times,especially when the trains are full, that those seats are taken by regular people. I've had to stand because they wouldn't get up, even though I was 7 or 8 months pregnant. They also wouldn't get up for elderly people either.

No one has ever given a seat to me. Actually, I gave my seat up to an elderly woman and her friend (I was alone in a two seater).
After I got up, one noticed I was pregnant and then she wanted me to sit. It was cute. I said I was fine, and after 1 stop, I found an empty seat. -
I don't take public transportation so never had to deal with inconsiderate people, but! When I was taking the tram to my gate at the airport, someone offered their seat to me bc I was holding LO in the ergo!

Haha. I live in New York. It is every man for himself. People wouldn't offer you a seat even if you were dying. But I have given up my seat for people. It is not something you see very often though.

@Andrea: Funny you say that because I lived in NY for a number of years and after my train ride (in boston) this morning, I kept telling myself 'That never would have happened in NY!' I found people in NY so much friendlier and considerate than people here...maybe in my hormonal state, I'm really really missing NY

@betsyboop: i feel like there are a lot of friendly people in NYC, too, since the city gets such a bad rap but i think people are super protective over train seats! sorry you are missing NY. =( I would give up my seat for you!

I always give up my seat for people on the bus. I don't know if it's a Kiwi thing or what, but school kids and teenagers are expected to always give up their seats... Even for people who aren't elderly or pregnant. And they do, and I guess I've hung on to the habit still
