Aside from insurance/government issues, two reasons NOT to do the shot a week before travel:
1) MMR can cause a reaction/fever 7-10 days later...my kiddo had a high fever
2) the vaccine won't really be effective after just a week, you would want at least two weeks to reach peak efficacy

I had this issue recently with the flu shot. Since my LO needs the 2 part one, they give 1 and then 2nd is a month later. Well I get to the office and hear the receptionist tell someone over the phone it has to be at least 30 days apart. It had been 27 days since her first one. No one mentioned that on the phone when i called so I couldn't get it. What a waste of time!
