I have my 20-week anatomy scan this Friday and I remember something about drinking a lot of water beforehand. This was not mentioned to me when I made the appointment. Is it necessary? Were you required to do this before your anatomy scan?

I had read before when you have your early U/S you want to have your bladder full but when you have your later ones it's better to have it empty. I can't remember where I heard this or how much validity...but I did have fantastic u/s pics!

I was told that for any scans in the second tri you should drink 24 ounces of any liquid but milk 30 minutes prior to the appointment and then not pee.

Yes, I forgot how much but it was a lot of water!

I had to drink 2 bottles of water for my 13 week U/S but not for my 20 week one.

I didn't have to drink a thing. There is really no reason to. I will say, I had a full bladder going in and baby was uncooperative. The tech asked if I want to pee. I did and baby showed us the goods. Lol

I didn't have to drink anything. I actually called before my 12 and 20 week scans and asked if I needed to and was told it was unnecessary.

I just had my anatomy scan last week. Never heard anything about drinking water! I didn't and the scan went great! I'm sure they would have told you beforehand.

I have just been told to stay hydrated before any u/s because it would enhance the images. But I wasn't told to drink a specific amount or to have a full bladder.

They didn't say anything to me about it...I did have a full bladder but I don't know if it helped at all!

They had me drink a TON of water & I had to pee SO badly afterwards!! I wonder why some places don't ask you do & some do?!

They told me how many ounces of water to drink beforehand. I can't remember how many, but it was a lot. It was miserable b/c I had terrible morning sickness throughout my pregnancy, and keeping down water was always a major challenge.

i had a TON of u/s done and i've never been asked to come with a full bladder, even in the beginning and i believe i had u/s since week 5?

I had my anatomy scan this morning (just past 22 weeks) and I wasn't asked to drink any water but it was requested that I didn't empty my bladder right before the appointment.

They didn't tell me to drink water but I did anyway, then they had me empty my bladder because it was too full! It is weird how some people seem to get told to have a full bladder and some don't.

Thanks for all your input ladies! I knew I could count on the HB community to know the answer

My docs office actually tells us we don't have to have a full bladder for the anatomy scan. They make me give a urine sample anyways as soon as I get there, so they would be out of luck

For both my ultrasounds this pregnancy (7w and 19w) they made me empty my bladder before starting. The tech said that they found having a full bladder doesn't increase baby movement or their ability to see the necessary things since today's equipment is so high tech. She said they have encountered several "accidents" when women had a full bladder because depending upon how the baby is laying they may need to push a little to get a good view.
I had gone before both ultrasounds as directed but when they did my 7w my bladder was already filling back up. For my 19w the tech had trouble seeing something so she pushed the probe a little which ended up making both me and baby jump so I was really glad to not have full bladder for that.

I am always pounding water going into my OB appointments, but that's only so I can provide the required urine sample. And I basically have to explode when I do that, so there's no holding it until after the ultrasound I've never had any problems getting the baby to show up on screen.

My doctor said I had to drink water before. I didn't take it seriously because I heard once the baby's bigger it's no big deal. But then she said that she was having trouble seeing everything because I didn't drink enough water. My theory is you can drink it, and if they don't want you to it's easier to pee it out then drink it and let it get into place.

Yes, I was told to drink 8 oz of water every 15 minutes for an hour before my A/S. I definitely had a full bladder when I went in there!! I did get a inter-vaginal one after my A/S, for this one I had to alleviate before that one, it was a relief.

every time i've gone in, i have to give a sample right before, so i don't think i'll ever go into a U/S with a full bladder.

i was told to drink 2 bottle before both my NT and anatomy scans.

It depends on the equipment used. It used to be you should have a full bladder, but more and more offices are now using equipment where an empty bladder is best.
My advice, go in with a full bladder and if you don't need it, you can take care of that easy enough. But going in with an empty bladder and having to down water and wait and hour sounds like more hassle.
