Are they a must?
DD def chews the straps on the side... I haven't done front facing with her yet but imagine she'd drool a ton too.
And right now I don't wear her much but imagine I will as she gets older (4 mo now) and as it gets warmer in the NE...

We didnt have any when DD was being worn. I just threw my carrier (Ergo) in the wash and called it a day. I know parents who have tulas are really into them because they are afraid it will compromise the reselling of their Tulas.
I guess it wouldnt hurt to have them so you dont have to wash your carrier frequently

I never had them for DS1, but I'm making some for DS2, just because.
I don't think they're totally necessary.

@bunnylove08: @ValentineMommy: So the alternative is really just wash your carrier? For now I kinda drape her bib over it so she's drooling/chewing on that instead. I'm not 100% about spending $30+ on a set of these things!

They are a necessity for us. He's a drool machine and I can't be throwing my carrier in the wash constantly...takes too long to dry! You can get cheaper ones on Etsy. There are lots of shops that sell for around $15. They just might not match your carrier.

I have a breastfeeding / teething necklace that I wear when she's in the Tula so she chews that instead of the straps. She's not a huge drooler so that hasn't been an issue.

I bought a set on etsy that are adorable for less than $10. Just makes it easier for washing and absorbs the drool better.

@Littlebit: Oo thanks! I said $30+ b/c I was looking at the ones with the front cover too in case I wear her front facing. Ugh now I wish I sew!

@snowjewelz: I never got them and C chewed on the dark brown straps of my Beco gemini a lot. Her saliva discolored the straps over time- because I almost never washed it. So I started putting baby legs over the straps after that but the damage was done. So I would say yes, get some!

If you plan to resell, suckpads are a good idea. Washing your carrier less/less fading the better

@snowjewelz: if the bibs are working for you then no need to get them. We didn't use it because DD didn't really chew/suck on the straps. The teething necklaces and toys are also a good option

I have a friend who just puts her baby's normal bib over the front of the carrier (while the baby is wearing the bib) when she wears her facing outwards.
@peasinapod: Where did you get your breastfeeding/teething necklace? I need to look into getting one of those!

I've heard good things about the silicone necklaces too but my lo really likes chewing on the crochet beads. My dh even wears it when we're out and she's bored.

If we didn't have this, we would have to wash the ergo every time we used it.
