In DH's culture it's common to pierce baby's ears early-- like within the first few months. I was initially excited to do it, but now I'm getting cold feet. I was told by a friend not to go to mall places like Clarie's because the holes won't be straight. I also know others who had their ears pierced early and the holes aren't even.
What do you think about baby ear piercing? Have you done it? What was your experience?

I had it done as a baby. To me it seems easier. I don't even remember getting it done. My holes are even but I honestly can't tell you where my mom had it done at. Lol
It's common in my culture for girl babies to get it done early. We're taking my baby niece soon.

It is certainly possible for the holes to be uneven when she grows up. Obviously it won't happen for sure, there's a possibility it would be fine, but it's impossible to know for sure how it will turn out as she grows. And I agree about Claire's, you're better off at a tattoo/piercing place. Might seem like a weird place to take a baby, but which seems less risk - a professional piercer who has tons of training, all he does is piercings all day, and he uses the proper needles...or a teenager at the mall who does a few piercings a week with a piercing gun that is known to not work as well as a piercing needle. My ears were pierced at Claire's and it was fine, but if it were my little girl I'd feel more comfortable with a professional that has the proper equipment.
If I have a daughter I'm waiting to pierce her ears until she is old enough to ask to have them done and can take care of them herself, but that's just my personal preference. And it's probably just because of my experience - I got them pierced for my 12th birthday, and was so excited and felt very grown up and responsible =) Plus I want to cry watching my little boy get necessary shots, so I'd hate watching him in pain from something like that. I know it doesn't hurt bad and obviously it's temporary, but I couldn't handle it!

I had mine done as a baby and will be getting DDs ears pierced at 6 months. I don't have first hand experience yet, but her pediatrician does them starting at 6 months. I'm much more comfortable with him doing it than a teenager at Claire's (although my niece had hers done there @ 9 months and was fine) or taking my baby to a tattoo/piercing place.
Could you see if any pediatricians in your area offer ear piercing?

@glimmersnaps: it's common in my husband's culture, too. Our pediatrician is Pakistani and the entire practice is either south Asian or Arab, so they offer ear piercing after 3 months in the office.
Mrs. Owl just did a blog post about this. I'm chicken too, so we haven't decided yet. Having said that, I got mine pierced when I was in 5th grade after begging for them and I cried like a big baby and sure enough, they are not perfectly even--so waiting till she's older is no guarantee of less drama or more even piercings.

I'm wishing we had done my daughter's earlier. It's common in my husband's culture as well, and he would really like her ears pierced. I hesitated when she was smaller, and now she's 13 months old, and I'm a little bit afraid that she'll pull at them. She fusses when I do her hair (ponytails/pigtails/barrettes), but quickly forgets they are there once I've got them in place. I'm hoping that earrings would be the same, but I'm not sure.
If we do take her, it will either be to a local ear-piercing place that does lots of babies, or at a pediatrician recommended by his parents (who are in the medical field) in their hometown the next time we visit.

Definitely stay away from Claire's. I got my ears pierced from there as a teen and my the whiles were uneven.
My dermatologist pierced my ears for me the second time and the whiles were straight.

I never even thought of a pediatrician or dermatologist doing it. That's a great idea!
@Pinkelephant yes that's what happened to my SIL she waited and now she feels like she has to wait till she's older because she will pull on them.
