Diet. You can't out train a bad diet. Anyone who tells you different is just, well, wrong.
Ever heard of ChickenTuna? Yeah, so, here is the difference between working out and eating whatevs, and working out and eating right:

My old gym gave us some statistics and that 80% of fitness is proper nutrition and 20% of it is exercise. So I'd focus on nutrition first.

Diet, hands down. And not just restricting calories - how you structure your diet is king.
pomelo / 5791 posts
I think it depends on your body and lifestyle.
I think if someone is extremely overweight and eats a ton, then the first thing to focus on is the diet. I feel like exercise becomes more important when you've lost some weight to tone up a bit.
That being said, I've been "skinny fat" for a long time. I'm average in weight and clothing size, but appear pretty flabtastic because I don't exercise basically at all. So for me personally, exercise would be more important.

I agree that's it's diet. I prefer excercise though.

Eating for sure.
I've never seen significant changes in my body from exercise alone although weight/strength training has been the best thing I've ever done for my body.

Before my wedding I worked out 3-5 times a week, intense cardio each time, for 3-4 months straight and even though I was definitely more toned, I did not lose any weight and although my clothes looked better on me, they still fit the same.
After the wedding (doh!!) I decided to go on weight watchers. Lost 25 lbs in 6 months and went down 3 dress sizes. I started out exercising as well, but I stopped after realizing it was just exhausting me and not making much of a difference. I think I was losing an average of 2.5 lbs a week with exercise, but just over 2 lbs a week without.

@ValentineMommy: I agree with this completely. I'm sure I could improve my eating habits, but I'm not looking to lose weight so just adding exercising without changing my eating habits, I've seen an improvement in how tone and fit I look.

Definitely diet, that's why so many marathoners are overweight or gain weight while training - because they don't watch what they eat! (I definitely don't mean all runners, though!)

Diet for sure. I used to run a ton, and worked out a lot in the gym, but ate whatever I wanted... so I gained muscle, but didnt look much different. When I adjusted my diet (and exercised less), I definitely looked better and clothes fit a lot better too.

I've found I can't lose weight with just one, so I can't pick. I've dieted and not exercised. And I've exercised and not dieted. My weight has not moved. It only does when I do both.
@MsLipGloss: I actually prefer the picture on the left, though I think the one on the right is supposed to be "better"?

Diet for sure. But I think if you only diet and don't exercise, it's not as sustainable. As you diet, you'll lose muscle mass too... resulting in a slower metabolism. Hence yo-yo dieters, and those who diet too much having trouble losing the weight as easily the next time they diet.

@californiadreams: I personally like the picture on the left more too... I like that soft, feminine look.

I think they are both incredibly important. You can't lead your healthiest life eating junk or neglecting regular exercise.

@californiadreams: ha! I was thinking the same thing - if I looked like the pic on the left I would be thrilled and not be dieting!!

@californiadreams: @Mamaof2: Totally agree! I was kinda like ugh when looking at the second photo!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Um, she looks awesome in the second photo. Maybe not what most people would choose (and that's ok, she probably doesn't want your body types, either, lol) , but she's incredibly lean, and you just can't get a body fat that low without diet *and* exercise, which I think was the takeaway. A VERY small percent of the population wants to get down to competition body fat like that. I think the vast majority could benefit from some in-between!

@KelLeeLeee: Next time I run a half marathon or longer, I'm going to talk with an RD first to game plan because I gained SO much weight last time! It was crazy!
pomegranate / 3411 posts
@blackbird: I just don't find fake tan, boob job and very defined muscles all that attractive, that's why I prefer the photo on the left. I wasn't saying she needs to want my body type or even comparing! If I were to look even remotely like the photo on the left, it would still require significant diet and exercise combined. And even then, I don't think my body is capable of being that thin while still giving it what it needs to be healthy and happy.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@californiadreams: Given the choice, I would choose the second photo. ETA: "Better" wasn't what I was going for . . . I was going for Leaner (and the difference diet makes).
@blackbird: Can I also add that she's 46 . . . 46!!!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@blackbird: "and that's ok, she probably doesn't want your body types, either" LOL! She definitely wouldn't want my booty...but I want hers!!
pomelo / 5509 posts
@MsLipGloss: Diet and exercise and maybe a little plastic surgery to get to the 2nd photo? Are those her real boobs?
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@californiadreams, i like to think that my boobs might look that perky were it not for this baby,
@lawbee11, seriously.
But she fully admits she DOES NOT EAT CAKE. That life is not for me. But that's ok
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: I am with you. She looks amazing, esp for 46 but I would prefer the softer look then more lean like that. I have curves and I want to keep those. And I know DH wants me to keep them. I just need to get them under control.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@blackbird: for real, no cake isn't a life worth living
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@IRunForFun: For sure they're not real! I don't really care about that though . . . I'm too busy admiring her lack of body fat and her bootay!
papaya / 10473 posts
Somehow this veered into a body shaming thread... It goes both ways! It isn't cool to rip someone apart for the way they look.
@blackbird: @MsLipGloss: Her butt. For reals. Its amazing!
pomelo / 5509 posts
@MsLipGloss: Ha, I was like wait, exercise can't do THAT!
Her current body type is not for me but she's definitely a very fit woman! That's gotta take a lot of dedication.
honeydew / 7917 posts
Diet. The last time I seriously exercised was back in college. With diet alone, I have been able to maintain my weight, and I'm happy with that. I don't have the time or dedication to exercise regularly, but one day I will get back on track.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
@blackbird: lol, well if my boobs looked like that naturally, I probably wouldn't love them either because I would think they looked fake! I actually don't know if hers are or aren't. And ya, I agree about the cake - hence why I said my body would not be healthy OR happy. some foods, like cake, make me happy sometimes
@MsLipGloss: I see your point about leaner. I'd still choose the first
