I just read on CNN that the shooter's brother was found dead at a home in Hoboken, NJ.

I think they shouldnt have released the name of the shooter until they were really sure of it
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@Mrsbells: they haven't officially identified the shooter yet. I don't think they can do that until they've notified the next of kin.

I keep alternating between almost unbearable grief and overwhelming anger.

i cannot stop crying.
i cannot stop thinking about the fact that a couple hundred miles away, children in a classroom similar to mine were killed by a gunman. i cannot stop imagining their scared cries for help.
i am heartbroken.
squash / 13199 posts
@mrs. wagon: Oh I see but on CNN they have been referring to him as Ryan Lanza and now I'm hearing that it might actually be his brother Adam who was the shooter.

There was also a knife attack in a Chinese school today. I heard 20+ children. What a horribly sad, sad day. These poor children.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: I immediately thought of you in your classroom with your kids.
How do we even pray about this? I can't find words, even for God.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: I was thinking of you. It's good that its the weekend and your kiddos have some time at home for extra hugs.
squash / 13199 posts
CNN just updated it and said 20 children died, 18 died on the scene and two more at the hospital.

@FutureMrsMcK: Yes, what you said exactly.
I just cannot wrap my head around things like this.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@bpaig: I was thinking about that too. Apparently no one died in that incident but can you imagine the trauma those kids will have to live with, having been through that? Ugh.
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@jedeve: yes, i'm so glad it's the weekend, too, and my kiddos can get lots of extra love. i just got an email from a parent thanking me for what i do in light of all this, and of course, i cried some more.
i think what saddens me most of all is that school is supposed to be a SAFE place. we tell that to our students all the time. school is a safe place, filled with safe adults. never in my preparation for my career did i think i would have to worry about my safety or my students' safety. but, now, on top of fire drills and tornado drills, we are required to do 2 lock-down drills a year.
what is happening to our world?

@mrs. wagon: I just... what makes someone capable of looking a child in the face and stabbing them? Oh I can't even handle it. CT and China both, just makes me sick. And yet, what a privilege to get to be sickened from the outside rather than being one of the grieving parents for whom Christmas will never be the same. So awful.
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@mrs. wagon: you're so right. i don't even know how to pray...especially immediately...i feel like it wouldn't even make sense to pray for comfort for these families now because *i'm* angry and filled with grief, so i can't even imagine that these families could even begin to be comforted.

I have no words. They say that becoming a parent changes you ... this story, I can't even handle it. I just cleaned my bathroom to distract myself because of it!

@Mrs. Cowgirl: I was just talking to my niece (7th grade) the other day an she said they had just done a lock-down drill at school. I remarked that we never had those drills when I was in school. She seemed surprised. That made me really sad that something like a lock-down is a normal thing for kids these days. Now this...it's really unfathomable and heartbreaking. Makes me really concerned about bringing a child into this dark world.
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@JamieLee: we started doing them after the virginia tech shootings. and we have been told to be honest with the students, telling them that we practice a lock-down drill in case someone who is not safe ever comes into our school. it's hard to explain that to 5 year-olds...

It's just unspeakable. Gun laws here are criminal (sorry, my own opinion).

Wow. Ok. Adam Lanza (not Ryan) is the suspect's name, he's 20 years old. His mother Nancy Lanza was the teacher at the school. His girlfriend and another friend are missing in NJ (according to an AP report)

@Mrs. Cowgirl: I was thinking of you and your students today. I don't know what else to say other than that. Teachers are heroes in so many ways. Thank you for that.

The Ryan Lanza from Facebook is the brother of the gunman. He was taken into custody for questioning according to CBS. Just saw video and its definitely the same guy.

I just can't bear to think about this. Those poor little souls, and their poor poor parents. Not to mention the terror the other kids at the school will deal with.
When I was in Elementary school, a man with a gun entered my school. Luckily a staff member intercepted him and forced him into a bathroom where he killed himself, while we all evacuated to another nearby school. It was terrifying, and although this man only killed himself, I know it took a long time for many kids to feel safe at school again. My poor dad drove by the school as the police arrived, and before they really knew anything, and I know it took him a long time to not drive by the school a dozen times a day once we were back at school.

I've been trying to avoid reqding about this as much as possible all morning while waiting at the OB's office. It's truly a heartbreaking day for parents everywhere. But now im reading all your responses and crying over my lunch...is nothing sacred and safe for LOs anymore?

@prettylizy: thank you. it makes me SO sad that these teachers had to be heroes in *this* way...

@zippylef: CBS news on TV. They are saying that it is not that he is necessarily involved, but being questioned. It looks just like the Ryan Lanza from Facebook.

@zippylef: @JamieLee: I also just read this on The Record (NJ paper) and saw it on CBS news.

If the shooter was Adam, brother of the Ryan Lanza that people were posting about everywhere, I wonder if Ryan had any idea? Like, he was just saying, no, not me, no big deal, only to find out it was his brother? And, that his mother was killed by his own brother?
I can't stop reading the updates, even though it is making me sick.
coconut / 8234 posts
@Foodnerd81: The Newton Patch has an article that mentions they talked to one of Ryan Lanza's friends and he told the reporter that he thought the shooter might be his "developmentally disabled" younger brother.

I can't stop reading either.

Now CNN says no body was found in the Hoboken home. I guess only the CT one-- I guess probably the dad.

@Foodnerd81: CNN just said that the mom was the one they found in the house.

I don't understand how someone could kill innocent children. It breaks my heart. I can't even imagine what the families are going through.

@dc yoga bee: And none of those Chinese kids are dead as far as I've read.
Poor sweet innocent babies and their families. I am absolutely devestated.

A friend of DH's lives next door to the shooter's brother. He is not dead, but was taken in for questioning.
blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts
This all makes me literally feel sick to my stomach. I can't help but try to look for a "reason," for some sort of explanation for how a person can shoot a bunch of 5 year old babies, not to mention everyone else. I know there's no explanation that would make it better, but I just can't stop thinking about why a person would do that. There are just no words. I keep hugging my tummy because it's the closest I can get to holding my babies in my arms.
@Mrs. Cowgirl: @mrs. wagon: Personally, I just pray that God will work in the lives of everyone affected, including people like us who aren't personally involved, at each stage however they may need. I once read that it's in the darkest times that we truly learn to live by faith because that's when we can't "see" or "feel" God.
