Our local news has been airing live updates. It's horrific. I can't even imagine what the kids and parents are going through. I've been holding P and crying. It is just so so sad.

I saw this early this morning but had no idea so many children died until just now.
I grew up near Blacksburg and was in college (though not at VT) during the shooting there. Ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh.

I seriously can't even imagine. It's beyond terrible.... Words can't even describe what must be going on there.

Just read about it too! Terrible! There was a mall shooting in our city earlier this week. There is no where safe anymore.

I turned on the tv a few minutes ago and saw this. 27 now dead :-(. Not to turn this into a political debate, but this is why I believe strongly in much stricter gun control laws. How many times do tragedies like this have to happen?

And apparently 22 children were stabbed at an elementary school in China.

I'm sitting at the lunch table at work with the news on holding back tears. Makes me so sad and scared to think of the world I'm about to bring my baby into. Praying for those families.

As an educator, I keep asking myself what I would do if I were put in this situation. It is my responsibility to protect my students. Would I play hero and jump in front of a bullet to protect my kids? That would leave my LO without a mother. Could I live with myself if I didn't? It is horrifying that I even have to think about these kinds of scenarios.
My heart breaks for each student, teacher, family member, and community member.

This is just heartbreaking. A school should be a safe place for kids.

@MrsCB: amen.
@rahlyrah: Don't think too much about it. You could never know what you would do, and there would be no "right" or "wrong" choice.
@Phillybaby2013: yeah, my productivity at work is gone. I wish I could hold my LO but baby's still in my belly....

@rahlyrah: I saw on the tv, that teachers were ushering the students into hiding, in bathrooms, corners in gyms etc. which was smart. Praises for these men and women for trying to keep these kids safe, and themselves safe too. This is just so very sad. An elementary school.

I can't imagine what the parents and kids are going through.... it's so horrible I can't wrap my mind around it - these are innocent little kids! I just keep imagining, "what if it was my daughter at her school...."

How horrible! The count is 27 confirmed dead. 18 of those are children. One gunman is dead, and the other is in police custody. They had on bullet proof vests.
I will be following this closely to see what the other shooter has to say. This is so, so awful.

So heartbreaking!!!!!!
Let's focus on the kids for now... if someone wants to discuss gun control in a separate thread at a later point, that should be a separate discussion.
I can't believe that 18 kids were killed... what kind of person kills children??

They have a parent that called in on the news now. They had a reverse 911 that alerted parents of a code red, which is interesting. The teachers heard cursing on the loud speaker, and knew something was wrong so had everyone hide. I like many others am literally in shock right now.

I am in total shock... I want to drive home at 90 mph and hold my kids tight...
It is unimaginable how much pain these people are going through right now. My heart is breaking. I can't imagine what those kids saw. How long was shooting happening for all of those people to die!!!

omg. this is sickening. i cannot wrap my head around this and i'm not sure i want to get to a point where i could. i am horrified. my deepest sympathies to those close to this.

I can't get over the fact that this happened in an elementary school and it looks like it happened in a kindergarten classroom. That's the youngest in an elementary school. I cannot imagine. They're just babies.
