I never bought an infant insert. We bought the Ergo when DD was about 1 year, so she never needed it; with DS, I just started putting him in the Ergo a couple weeks ago. He's 3.5 months, 15 pounds, and has really great head control, so I feel comfortable moving him into the Ergo now.

I never bought the insert, but started putting LO in the Ergo at around 3.5 months old?

Yea she had pretty good head control and I think it was around 3-4 months that we stopped using the insert. The back of the ergo kinda held her head a bit too.

I stopped using the infant insert a couple of weeks ago, so 3 months I guess. DD has good head control, but she still sits pretty low in the ergo, and her legs seem to splay out really wide to fit out the leg holes. To counteract those issues, I've been balling up an Aden & Anais blanket in the bottom of the Ergo, and baby sits on that. It's kind of like the cushion at the bottom of the infant insert, without having the whole hot wraparound part if that makes sense. The blanket boosts her up a little higher, so she can see out of the carrier, and it allows her legs to stay in a more comfortable position.

LO has always hated the insert, so now at 9 weeks we do what @skibobrown: does. A&A (or whatever is handy) blanket rolled up in the bottom. She is younger than recommended, but she's tall for her age (can see out), her legs don't come all the way out of the carrier (only her toes poke out), and she doesn't fight it anymore! And now I'm more comfortable babywearing for long periods of time... I can only use the sling for so long before my shoulder starts cramping.

We have an ergo, but I never bought the infant insert (Sawyer would hate it because he hates being hot). He still doesn't quite fit into it at 11 weeks, I give it a try about once a week or so.

I plan to stop using the insert when LO is 5 months old since thats what is recommended. I dont really like the insert to be honest especially in the hot summer

@skibobrown: and
@c.sassy: That's a great idea.
I'm asking because LO is 3 months old in a few days and I'm thinking of making the transition from our wrap-sling carrier to the ergo soon, but we don't have the infant insert. And a friend of mine said she would lend me her infant insert because she doens't use it anymore, but I was wondering if I would even need that.
Everyone has answered my question nicely, thanks....looks like I'm in the right ballpark at 3 months to be thinking about this. I'll try him out with the 'blanket insert' and see how that goes.

@c.sassy: DS haaated the insert, too
I tried it without the insert at around 4 months and he's tolerated it quite well since then

@CVBEE: Since you aren't having to buy the infant insert I suggest getting it from your friend and trying the Ergo both with and without it. You might find that your LO needs the insert and you might find that they don't. I think DD was about 4m when we stopped using the insert but she has always been in the 90% for height and had really good head control.

i think we stopped using it 4 months when her head was able to stick out of it a little more and she had good neck control.
