Everybody from ________________..... (preconceptions about your state)

I grew up in Utah, so everyone thinks we're all conservative, white, Mormons. Not true!

Now I live in Indiana, and I'm honestly not sure what people think, other than the fact that Hoosiers love basketball.....

I grew up in NJ and pre Jersey Shore, people would just always assume it was dirty. Which pissed me off because I literally think I grew up in the best place on earth- constantly went to NYC, spent all summer at the shore, visited farms and mountains and lakes and cities and so much close by.

Post Jersey Shore everyone thinks we're trashy guidos. Those people do exist but it's more varied than that. And there are much nicer parts to the shore than Seaside (or SLEAZEside as we called it... we used to joke you couldn't walk on that boardwalk barefoot without getting a disease!) I hate when I say I'm from NJ and people ask "oh do you know Snooki!?" UGH. SHE"S FROM POUGHKEEPSIE NY. NOT NJ.

Also hate when I say I'm from NJ and people try to talk in a Jersey accent. It's ALWAYS- literally 100% of the time- a Boston accent that they think is a NJ accent. JOISEEYYYY. No. We say Jersey. I am kind of rude to people who do this which maybe is one of the NJ stereotypes that may or may not be true about me sometimes

I moved to IN after college and it used to annoy me that people assumed IN was central time. I can understand it, but look at a dang map. Just the NW and SW corners are central because they relate to central time zone metro areas. I have one rude uncle who once asked us if we were late because we were on Indiana time ("We're in the same time zone as you, and no, we just hit traffic, thanks.") and then asked if we had HD TV out there. (Face palm. It's not the middle of nowhere in INDIANAPOLIS. Come on.)

Now that I'm in FL, I just feel like everyone here hates tourists and that's about it

@kjpugs: I don't hate tourists! Bring your money here, people. Just do it from June-August. I don't want to be outside then, anyways.

I think a lot of the stereotypes about Florida are true, though. Old people - check. Crazy people - check. Lots of alligators - check. Spend lots of time at the beach - check.

@LazyLightning: Baha, that's what I said- no preconceptions because nobody but South Dakotans think that anybody lives here, lol.
@kjpugs: Lol, I guess maybe that's one misconception about ND too- before we moved here, people asked if we would be able to have Internet access and so on. Yeah, um, we're the only house for a couple of miles in either direction and we have top-of-the-line underground fiber optic service. Not too shabby for being almost 20 miles out of town.

@BananaPancakes: LOL it is more of a love/hate with tourists. Glad they support the state. But anywhere we go with locals it's "ugh" tourists when they clog the roads and walkways and beaches etc. Is it blasphemy that I've only been to the beach 2 times?

@FarmWifeGina: I love NJ but that's one thing that stinks about it... NJ born and bred people can be a little closed off to outside it!!! I couldn't believe my uncle thought Indiana was some barren wasteland. My sister asked me if I could go see Mount Rushmore for a quick road trip (I think it was 18 hours. NO.)

  6. BananaPancakes

    grapefruit / 4817 posts

@kjpugs: Ha Ha , I only bitch about old people driving. Tourists don't bother me half as much. But I also only drive I-4 when I absolutely must.
And it's not blasphemy. My sister was raised here, and hates the beach because she's so pale. She goes like once a year, maybe. But most everyone I know tries to go as often as possible.

@BananaPancakes: I would go more! I just have no friends and DH works on the weekend! We're in Orlando so you can imagine the challenges that poses as well... tourist wise too... nothing in Orlando except tourist destinations (ie, no beach/everglades just Disney, Sea World, Universal) so now that we've done the tourist stuff, it bugs us (trying to rent a car during spring break time, for example. It was almost impossible!!!) But since DH works for one of the parks I mentioned, he clearly appreciates them... just doesn't like driving behind them!!

I DO wish we were less tourist-focused because it keeps a lot of chains/brands from coming. I miss my Penn Station... Trader Joe's... Rock Bottom... Noodles & Co... Cosi... so many delicious chains that aren't in Orlando or even FL because it's a "tourist market" and doesn't have the stable "repeat business." I would literally do ANYTHING for a Penn Station sub right now.

I live in Northern VA, and I guess the preconception is that we all care about politics, are rich and snobby. I hate to admit it but a lot of it is true. Most people I know are obsessed by power and money. I feel like VA is really broken into North vs. South. It's very different based on where you live.

People from Missouri are fat rednecks who live on farms and make meth.

People from St Louis are all racist and ghetto and shoot each other. And we all know Nelly.

@kjpugs: I forgot you guys were in Orlando. I went to UCF, so it is a whole other world there. Especially because you probably live in the thick of it. You haven't been here for long, have you? I'll have to brainstorm good stuff you you to do.

@BananaPancakes: yep, just over a year now in Florida! I realize I sound like a total loser in my last reply!! DH just works weekends so we don't get out much, and I work from home so I don't get to meet people. I'm hoping to find mom friends once LO is here!!! (Yesterday DH was saying how he wished we had a pool and I said OH ME TOO then maybe I could make friends! HAHA HOW SAD is that.)

everyone from Massachusetts is uptight, drives like an a-hole, is obsessed with sports and talks like they do in "Good Will Hunting" and "The Departed".

I moved to California right after high school and it was right when Good Will Hunting had won all the Oscars. Everyone I met was so disappointed I didn't have the accent. I can put it on for ya though

@evansjamie: I just talked to DH about that yesterday! But I don't know if we'll have time while we're in Indiana (fly in, go right to shower, leave for Chicago the next AM for BIL's wedding.) If they have any in Chi I will definitely stop there Monday!!!!

@kjpugs: Ha ha! You didn't sound like a loser. It's not always easy to find a group of friends in just a year. I'll be your friend. Seriously. I'm in Orlando somewhat often. Or you can day trip to the fabulous city of Ocala (not fabulous at all.)

@BananaPancakes: I just had to look up where it was, haha! You would be on my way to gainesville! I have been DYING to go there for work to pick up Trader Joe's hahahaha! I will let you know next time I have to head up that way, hit me up anytime you're in Orlando!!! Even just grabbing coffee would be nice. My one friend here is moving next month

Well , im not from Florida but im here now. Ive heard it refered to as " the armpit" or "strap on dildo" of America due to its shape and location. And a few other things that arent very nice but i think the other Florida gals covered all the general bases ;).
Also, the further north you go, the farther" south "you get .

I'm in Oregon and we're not overrun with hippies and it doesn't rain everywhere all the time (I actually live in the desert!).

Although, i must admit that Portlandia does offer a humorous look into some stereotypes, and while they take it to the extremes, sometimes I can't help but be like, "ok, that's funny because I totally know someone like that!"

Also, once someone asked me if bears and wildlife just roamed around town. Wtf? No.

I think the posters have covered it, but NJ might be the poster child for assumptions about a state. Of course it doesn't help that there are enough reality shows set here to have a 24 hour NJ reality channel! I grew up on the Jersey shore but Snooki and her friends are not the norm. Neither are the Housewives, the Sopranos or the random people from the hair salon show I can't think of the name of : )

NJ is a pretty diverse place. I grew up at the shore, I work in an urban inner city and I now live in a fairly rural suburb. I also never say Joisey. I have met both Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi though. That assumption might have a grain of truth.

I really can't think of anymore.

People in New Zealand all own sheep, drink a lot and starred in Lord of the Rings.
For me, it's none of the above
