@Mrs. Pen: in michigan they just pick a person and have the reg expire on their bday month if multiple owners on car (my husband and I went through this).
Id fight this until it's cleared!!!

I always thought it expired on your birthday, but I've never had any problems with waiting. I mean...how does the cop know that your tags are expired, without pulling you over first and checking your birth date? Seems like an awful big hassle for a ticket.

Dang, that sucks. In my state tags expire based on the first letter of your last name. (Jan is A-C, Feb is D-F, etc. Those aren't the real letters and dates, but something like that). We had until April 22nd (today!!), and I waited until the last minute, so I'll just print out my receipt showing I paid, and carry that around with me until I receive my tags. That way if I get pulled over I can prove I've paid, and I'm just waiting on the tags. I've done that before and the cops are pretty nice about it.

@MrsRoo: Ok, I rest my case. Just checked the registration renewal invoice that came to the house for the car we gave to BIL. In black and white the registration expired on his bday. I still want to check out the actual registration that's in his car.
This would have all been avoided if Mr. Lime gave me his auto insurance policy number in March when I asked him for it.
