I have a soft sport for stationary and snail mail, so I've always looked forward to having one done. Plus we live abroad and my friends and fam back home wouldn't have gotten to see her otherwise. For us it was just a way to share the news. It's also a great memento to add to the books.
I picked out everything beforehand so all I had to do was insert her picture and add her details. Since you're due during the holidays, would it be possible to make it a Christmas card instead?

I did ours primarily for tradition but all of DH's family is on the other side of the country and I want one for my RE too.
As far as cost, throughout my pregnancy I got lots of shutterfly and tiny prints coupons and I bought a zulily deal that was $20 for $40. All in all I got 40 with envelopes and address stickers for $35. Add them on fb and email for specials and discounts.

Since we have zero plans of posting any photos of our children on facebook, twitter, myspace, instagram, etc, we'll send a birth announcement to DH's family that lives 500miles away, and won't be there for the birth or see their grandchild for a while probably. Also, all our friends live in our home state, so they'll get a birth announcement in the mail as well.

We sent them and I love getting them. LO was born around thanksgiving as well so I just took a picture of her sleeping when she was a week old and popped it onto a birth announcement/holiday template on shutterfly. with the coupon codes etc you can get a good deal, but I do think it is totally your call.
I also think that if you send them in a few months, people will still be happy to get them. I love having a fridge covered in baby pictures!
