I'm not talking about the politics of it, but more so, how does it work?
When is it effective?
How do you get insurance?
What does it cover?
How much do you pay?
I'm currently on COBRA paying $450/month ouch! I was just about to switch to a private plan through ehealthinsurance.com but mom said to wait and use Obamacare but I have no idea what that entails.. My income is currently $0 and I am unmarried but living with my partner FWIW.

I think it depends on your state what the coverage is and how much it costs. Some states are being proactive with implementing it, others are dragging their heels. You could probably do some research on your state government website to find out more information about it.

I'll definitely be following this.
I've tried looking up some things, but truth be told the private rates around us are increasing & we already haven't been able to afford ins on our own (last time I looked into it it was going to be 800/mth JUST for G). Something tells me that with where we are financially, not much will change for us... the kids qualify for medicaid & we can't find a doctor to take it anywhere near us.

@loveisstrange: Thanks, I read one similar the other day & checked out the cost estimator. I do like the idea of pre-existing not being an issue (DH is a cancer survivor so you can imagine the inability to find coverage), but there *has* been about a 30% increase around here through private insurances (for reg insured individuals, not us since our histories make it sky rocket)... it's just less than what was "expected" when they started all this back a few years ago.
I guess we'll just have to wait & see what our options are tomorrow...

Once we are married (6months?) I'll be able to jump on FIs plan, but unlike his plan in FL they don't cover domestic partners.

We're using private insurance right now, so I've been trying to figure out what's going on, too. Honestly, you can't find out exactly what rates are going to be like in your area until tomorrow, but I found this site to be nice at seeing what we might qualify for/expect.
What I'm trying to figure out now is how the premium assistance works.

@wheres_c: Would it save you a lot of money to be on your FI's plan, or will it still be pretty expensive to add you? If it would save you a lot have you thought about getting legally married sooner (at the courthouse) but still having a wedding in 6 months? You could also file a joint tax return if you did that. I know some people don't like the idea of already being married at their wedding, though. Just an idea!

Why don't you get married in a civil service to get on the plan now? I think it qualifies as a life event, so even if it is not open enrollment, you can get added.
I did a similar thing when I moved abroad.

I'm glad this post is here. I'm having an issue where DH gets his premiums paid by his employer, which is small and doesn't have to abide by the rules in the ACA. Even if they did, they cover the "affordable" part by paying the premiums. But, to add me to his plan (DS has state insurance), it'll cost way too much for us to live. But, I'm under the impression that if I can get it through his job, then I can't get the exchange programs...even if I could, I can't afford either, and DH makes too much for me to be on state insurance when I'm not pregnant (so, this won't even affect me until about June of next year, but I'm still confused.)
Thank goodness I have time and wait and see how others are doing with it.

I have been wondering about this, too. It'll be interesting to see exactly what coverage will be like for us. Currently DH and DD are covered via private insurance, but I am not.

@lawbee11: @looch: That's what FI wants to do. It would probably save us a fair amount. I have been against the idea though.
I know there's no way it would remain a secret, and I don't want all my in-laws talking behind our backs. Plus my parents are graciously paying for the reception, etc and would be upset if we did it that way.
I totally understand that it's often in the best interests of a couple but I've been firmly against it for us. If he had wanted to get married this year, he could have given me a ring sooner! It's a little bit of a sore spot for me so sorry if I sound crazy!

@wheres_c: well, i think you're in a good spot, you have private coverage and chances of something catastrophic happening are probably slim. I totally understand standing your ground on principle, though!
