Thats difficult. I would probably divide costs by 7 and have people pay per room.

Although you could argue that families are going to use more of the common space.

@lilyofthewest: when we do this, we just split the total cost by the number of families, regardless of the number of rooms. There’s too much room for argument about whether family with the master bedroom and bath should be priced at a premium v. the shared room with 2 single beds. I guess it might change if there was one family that needed half the rooms while everyone else is sharing, but it’s easier (to me) to split it like that

Who does the teen belong to? Maybe by room or family actually. Staying in one large house is a perk I'm assuming everyone wants, but if you guys were getting hotel, you'd each just pay for your own room, right? So I shouldn't really be that different here, even with having to share a bath.

Split per room but the rooms with private baths should pay more.

So maybe:

17% Family 1 - couple with kid and baby, sharing room & adjoining bath
17% Family 2 - couple with kid, sharing room & adjoining bath
17% Family 3 - couple with baby, sharing room & adjoining bath
13% Single adult 1 - own room, will use one of the two common space baths
12% Single adult 2 - own room, will use one of the two common space baths
12% Single adult siblings 3 & 4 - sharing room, will use one of the two common space baths
12% Teen family member - own room, will use one of two common space baths

Can you divide it equally among the adults? I think the proposed plan is a bit weird with counting babies! When we went with my in-laws on a trip we divided it three ways between my MIL/FIL - me/DH - SIL/her kids

I think it should be more based on room than per person. It is tricky because obviously a room with adjoining bath is much better than not. But I definitely don’t think per person including baby sounds right.

I think @ElbieKay: suggestion sounds just right (unless the occupancy tax is very high? Even then babies don’t count).

We always pay per bedroom

I’ve done these sorts of trips with two different groups and it’s always been split evenly per person (adults only). Yes, rooms with adjoining bathrooms are a plus, but who wants to share a bathroom with a kid? And if you start doing it by what room is better you invite all sorts of hurt feelings if some rooms are nicer than others or someone is sleeping in a twin vs. a queen or whatever else. The house is a unit (and so much more than just bedrooms), the friend/family group is a unit and the kids are just along for the ride. Idk what I’d do about the teenager—if it’s all family I probably wouldn’t count them, but i feel like if it were my kid I wouldn’t be offended to be asked to pay his/her share.

I agree that splitting by room (and therefore, the single siblings sharing a room split their room cost) is more than fair. If people quibble over own vs. shared bath, I’d do two things - (1) agree to try to minimize everyone else’s use of the common area bathrooms to give more privacy and (2) the families with their own baths split the end of rental cleaning fee, leave a cleaning tip if applicable, or pay for a meal. It’s not a big expense but will help the others feel better.
