I personally like the book "Be Prepared: A practical Handbook for New Dads. My husband turned it into a bathroom book but I know he read it because he related some of the stuff we went through early on to the book! I'm going to gift (a new copy) to some friends who are having their first.

Eye mask and earplugs. Good for both sets of parents really. There's so much noise in the hospital (if you have to sleep there) plus lots of getting up at night and turning on lights in the room that we both got in the habit of wearing them when we were "off" or really needed rest.
Gift cards to Starbucks and restaurants for takeout runs.

I got DH his favorite candy - it's not available locally so it was a treat. I think food is very handy at the beginning. Maybe a coffee maker/thermos (something to hold the caffeine) would also be good. Everyone wanted to get DH a jogging stroller the first time around since he loves to run.
