This morning at work, I left my office door slightly ajar to grab a muffin from the downstairs cafeteria. In the five minutes I was gone, someone came into my office, stole my wallet from my purse, and then went on a shopping spree with my credit cards. I, of course, stopped all of my cards, got a new ID, etc. but I just feel violated. Someone must have been watching me. I really hope it wasn't one of my students (I am a prof in higher ed). The guards are looking through security footage but not sure if they will be able to make any conclusions...Anyway, maybe it is because I am pregnant, but I am feeling shaken up by the whole thing. My office is in a pretty remote part of the school, and I don't exactly feel safe there right now. Silly, I know. Anyone experience something similar?

That's terrible! Students have stolen money and other things from teachers in my building before. I hope they figure out who took your wallet!

That's terrible! I hope the find out who did it. Did they use your cards in a physical store or online? If in an actual store, they may have security footage that can be reviewed for the time the purchase was made.
Our house was robbed when I was little, and it still makes me uneasy to this day. I don't blame you for being shaken up.

Omgosh that sucks. I hope they can find something on the tape! It's definitely unsettling when someone comes into your space and steals - this happened with DH's iPhone from his desk last year (we actually got it back but that's a story for another day lol)

@raintreebee: one summer during college I came home to my parents house to find an intruder in our home. We met in the kitchen and I blurted out "who the f are you" and he said "I'm nobody" and bolted out our back door. It shook me up for a long time.

That's awful! And completely understandable that you're feeling violated. I really hope the guards can figure this out so that you can find some kind of resolution instead of having it hanging over your head.

I'm sorry. Like you said that is a huge violation. I hope they find out who did it.
My office has had issues with cubicle purse/wallet/cell phone theft this year. There are only about 100 of us and we all have key cards so it feels safe. I guess employees were being nice and holding the door for others. As a result of the thefts we have a security guard that just meanders around our cube farm all day.

Ugh, that used to happen in my lab during the summer. I felt really violated too when I'd heard about it. You want to feel like some spaces are safe - it's such a bummer when they're not.

Thanks, ladies. I am glad you don't think I'm crazy. Unfortunately, the cameras at school aren't pointed at my office. They spent money at the subway and Marshall's, but it is in downtown Brooklyn, and I am unsure how helpful people will be about it. I would like to file a police report, but the precinct is in a bad part of town, and I don't feel like walking there pregnant. Maybe I can get them to come to the office.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, I would feel so violated too. And super protective since I'm pregnant. I hope you're able to get a police officer to work with you on this. Hugs!
