I just got turned down on my proposal to work 9 hours day and take 1/2 day fridays. I know ti was a stretch but i'm trying to find a little more balance with my family life. My boss was apologetic but said in a company our size if one does it everyone will he said to come up with some other options but honestly nothing else make sense.
Anyone else hit a road block when trying to find the balance?

I just asked to go down to 30hrs per week starting June 1st and it was approved - I am so freaking excited!!! I have been trying to find balance and working less is the only way for it to happen!
Since both kids will be in school this fall it makes sense financially too

@Mamaof2: I didn't really have anything else for him. It was a long shot i knew that going in. I need to keep my same paycheck so cutting hours really isn't an option. I'll keep thinking.

@LuLu Mom: can you work from home on Fridays? I mean, your still working but you can get a few things done around the house here and there too which would free up time on the weekends

I agree with asking if you could WFH on Fridays (or maybe another day of the week, so it doesn't look like you're just trying to have a long weekend?)
I know most companies are not as flexible as mine, so I'm really, really lucky to be able to WFH when I need to, as well as leave early or take longer lunches when I need to. If I didn't have that flexibility, I don't know how I would find balance. I want to spend as much time with my kids as I can while they are still young (and still want to be around me!)

I'm working on a proposal for my boss to work an amended schedule, 8:00 am-4:00 pm once I return from leave (if I stay with this company). There are a couple of other mothers who have either amended or reduced schedules, so I don't think it will be a problem. I'd prefer to work fewer hours, but I can't sacrifice pay with two in daycare.

@BabyBoecksMom: Yeah, another day of the week might be better. At my old job, I worked from home on Wednesdays, and it was awesome! I think it wouldn't have been as well received if I'd asked for Monday or Friday.

I wouldn't go back and ask again unless there was a specific reason that you needed to do a half day, like school lets out early one day a week and you need to be there for pick up.

@LuLu Mom: Could you do an early schedule? My husband works 6:30-4 and really enjoys that extra afternoon hour with our daughter. He works the same number of hours as everyone else, just shifted an hour earlier. He either picks up DD and goes home to play with her or he runs some errands before picking her up at daycare.

@My Only Sunshine: I actually did this after #2, i started working 7:30 to 4:30 instead of 8:30 - 5:30. this helped a ton but still it stinks that my youngest goes to bed at 7 and we are still only home for about 2 hours together.

I wanted to propose not taking lunch every other day so I can either come in late/leave early.
