I love to bake and can't imagine not making it myself. I think I'm going to make a rainbow layer smash cake for him and then cupcakes.

Made it! I baked the healthy chocolate from here: http://healthyindulgences.net/2009/05/healthy-chocolate-cake-with-a-secret/ with a coconut cream frosting.
I plan to bake all her birthday cakes! I just think there is something so special about that.

We purchased a cake. We did a smash cake this weekend and he did not like it. The kid doesn't like cake. We had to put fruit on the cake, so we could get pictures were it looked like he was eating the cake. LOL.

I am HUGE on making the kids cakes, even though I do not have mad cake skills! lol G has always loved them though so that's all that matters to me!
For P's first birthday I made her a "naked" chocolate bean cake & make the guests vanilla flavored cake in a jar (upcycled baby food jars)
For G's last birthday I made him a vanilla Star Wars cake of the Obi Wan fighting Anakin lava scene. (excuse the IG picture it's all I have on this laptop)

We didn't do a party or anything because we had just moved. I bought a 1/8 sheet cake from the grocery store and used it as a smash cake.

DD had two first birthday parties, one with family at my great-aunt's house (bought the cake) and one with friends at our house (made the cake).
DS will likely have two parties as well and we will probably do the same thing.

I hate baking, and we always buy our cakes from a bakery nearby that has the most delicious cakes ever. So we ordered from them and they include a mini smash cake with a first birthday cake purchase.

These were the favours I made for my DD1 last birthday (cat in the hat theme) and my friend made the cupcakes for me.
Though I usually make the main cake portion I was feeling overwhelmed with work last year to make it all.

And here is the petit fours and her tiny cake I made my DD2 for her first birthday (the same friend made the igloo, penguins, and snow man)
So I like to attempt to make it but with having a dec 20 and jan 6 babies (and the new one due dec 14) it can be hard. And I know there will be years that I won't make their cakes and that is ok.

@HLK208: LOL no worries and thank you!! I used cake mix and the cupcake frosting in a can to decorate it. I made the cupcakes and frosting by hand.

I made DD 1's 2nd and 3rd birthday cakes... All others (1st, 4th and 5th) were ordered. Oh, but for her 5th, the cake was ordered, but I made cupcakes for the kids.
I also ordered DD 2's 1st birthday cake.
Part of it is that I love so many local bakeries and their work, that I just love spoiling my kids with awesome cakes from them! Duff Goldman's bakery made our most recent birthday cake! How could I top that?!
I miss making and decorating cakes, but they are sooo time consuming!! One day, I'll go back to making them all myself, but for now, I see myself outsourcing them for a few years...
