Did your doctor say you couldn't lift up heavy objects? 25lbs and my kids are both over 30. Hmmm. They like to be carried sometimes.... A lot. Did you follow the doctor's advice? If not, was everything ok?

Yes but I had a c/s
This was honestly the worst part of coming home with a new baby - trying to get my toddler to understand why I couldn't hold him.
ETA: Oops never mind I read this totally wrong!!! YES I held my toddler when pregnant - it was fine medically speaking but physically it killed my back!!!

I asked the doctor this at my last visit. She said I could carry him because I have to - sticking him in the high chair, car seat, etc. her concern was more a kick to my stomach while throwing a tantrum or something.
I'm 20 weeks and still carry him. Luckily, this pregnancy has been easier so I can.

My doctor said nothing heavier than my 31-pound kid. I used pregnancy to wean said child from expecting to be carried. Now he knows he's lucky to get 30 seconds of it unless he's hurt or something.

I think it all depends on how your pregnancy is going. If you don't have any issues with your pregnancy, then lifting/carrying your toddler may not be a problem. But if you do have issues, lifting/carrying heavy objects (like a toddler), certainly aggravates things and isn't advised.
Currently pregnant with #2 and my toddler is 20 months. I had BH contractions very early in this pregnancy likely from "over doing it". I've been told on more than one occasion I need to really limit the amount of times I pick up my toddler (which is SO hard) because its putting too much stress on my body.
A good friend (also had a toddler while pregnant) was put on modified bed rest and was medicated because she was having early contractions and they were afraid she'd have a very premature baby. The stress of lifting and carrying her toddler was too much for her given her other issues.

My OB hasn't mentioned anything yet, and it's totally slipped my mind and I haven't even asked! I'm 23 weeks now... I need to ask at my next appt next week!

My doctor has never said anything. I think it is almost impossible to not be able to pick up your toddler while pregnant!

My doctor never told me not to carry heavy objects. There was no way around me not carrying my toddler, so I did.. a lot! DH took her from me whenever he could though.

Okay, I've been kind of out of the loop, but . . .You're pregnant??!?!?! So exciting! I now have so many questions about having another one after twins. Prepare to have your wall bombarded. Congrats!

I am very nearly 31 weeks and still carry my 23 pound 15 month old. I do have to make sure I don't carry him too much. My doctor has never told me I can't carry him or lift him. I do notice that my hip does get more sore if I carry him all day. I just need to know my limits is all.

My doctor said, and I quote, "Don't lift anything heavier than your youngest child."

My OB told me to try not to if I could. After two losses he said he would avoid lifting until things were settled. Now that I've had bleeding and a SCH I can't lift her at all.
Edit: I also had a friend who ended up with a hernia bc of lifting while pregnant.

With my second pregnancy I was told i couldn't pick up DD because I had a SCH. I didn't listen to it, because that's impossible! How can I tell a 19 month old I couldn't carry her?
After my c-sections though, I listen to that. Don't want to bust a stitch!

@tequiero21: congrats!!!!!
No, my doctor never told me not to lift anything. But he's a man of few words. I probably wouldn't lift both your twins at once!

He always said no heavy lifting but never specified an exact amount and I never asked because...I really had no option other than to carry my son. He was over 20 pounds through my whole pregnancy, for most of it at least 25.

My doctor said it was fine carrying my toddler. I wouldn't carry both of your kids at the same time though!!
CONGRATS!!

@Mrs. Blue: haha yup, still really early. Only 6 weeks. I feel comfy enough with hb to announce here. No one but our parents know irl. Are u looking to expand too? I'm excited but definitely scared having 3 under 3.... Eek!
@yerpie110: haha for now, thanks! I was hoping for a better ultrasound, but all we saw was the sac. She couldn't even get a good picture of the heartbeat. I guess we will know more next week.
@Andrea: @chopsuey: thx! Yeah, I'm still grabbing them both at once when they keep running away from me. I grab one then grab the other under my arms haha. Guess I should stop that soon.

@tequiero21: we definitely want more, but I'm scaaared! It will definitely be a while before we TTC. You're going to rock 3 under 3!

@tequiero21: congrats!!!
I lifted and carried DS during my whole pregnancy (33 lbs then). I noticed more pain and Braxton hicks when I lifted him during the last 10 weeks of my pregnancy. Now that I'm pregnant with #3, I'm carrying DD who is 24 lbs and occasionally DS who is 40. My doctor said its fine as long as my body was use to it before pregnancy.

My dr told me only to not carry anything more than 20 lbs when I was pregnant with DS because I had heavy bleeding in my first tri. I haven't had any issues with this pregnancy so he hasn't said anything.

My dr said it's ok to pick up LO as long as I use my legs and not my back. He is around 25 pounds at 14 months and I'm 30 weeks along, all parties are happy and healthy.

Congrats on #3! I think I saw you're going to be a September mama??
I don't plan on listening to it. DD is 23 lbs now but could be around 30 next time I'm pregnant...I'll just be seeing how I feel.

I asked and my OB said it was no problem at all to lift my toddler. She's now 21 months and I'm 35.5 weeks, and it's starting to get more difficult, so I offer to hold her hand more than carry her, but still do lift her quite a bit.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
I did (a lot) but it cause really bad back pain... When DH was home to help with the picking up it made a huge difference.
honeydew / 7917 posts
My doctor never mentioned anything about heavy lifting. My LO was 2 at the time, and I already had him used to walking on his own most of the time. If he asked to be held, I would respond back and say that I was holding the baby and couldn't carry him too. He seemed to understand and just take advantage of DH when possible. Even now I try not to carry him unless he is hurt.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
My midwives never said anything about not lifting my toddler so I continued to do it throughout my whole pregnancy (I'm 36 weeks now and my LO is 18 months). I haven't had any issues with it other than causing a fair amount of BH the past couple of months. The midwives said the BH are nothing to worry about, although when it gets uncomfortable, I should try to limit the amount I carry her. I find it only gets really uncomfortable when we're outside where it's five million degrees out and I'm trying to carry a 24 lbs toddler...

i carried charlie until the end, but he probably weighed around 25 pounds.
grapefruit / 4120 posts
My OB said not to carry him too much and to try and avoid bending or crouching down to get him off the floor, but I mostly did it anyway. I understand the risk of heavy lifting during pregnancy is more hurting your back rather than causing a miscarriage or whatever.

I carried LO A LOT and she was around 24lbs when I gave birth.
