For those of us who color their hair, how much do you spend? DH and I are working on a budget and he thinks I overspend. So, how much do you spend? Just point of reference, I live in DC and I spend around $300 to get my hair done every eight weeks. And I have to keep coloring my hair because keeping a professional appearance is important in my line of business.

Doesn't length of hair make a price difference too?
I know the right stylist is important so in lieu of switching can you go longer in between and touch up roots at home?

I think the processes you get done also affect the price. I used to pay about $250 for my highlights, but I would stretch it out a lot and finally I tired of them, so I am back to my natural color. I have a few grays popping up, but I can address them with a semi permanent color at home.

@regberadaisy: I LOVE my stylist, so I'm trying to work out price with her because I'd hate to switch. I'm thinking it might be cheaper to switch to all over color. Currently we do highlights and all over color.

@regberadaisy: That's what I'm thinking. I'm going to have DH go to the salon with me and he can see what things cost. He has no hair so I don't think he realizes how much womens hair costs.

Mine depends on how long and how much extra color she needs to use, but to color it's around 60-70 and then plus the cut/style I can usually get it all done around 100. My sister is my stylist though, so I get a discount.

I do a full color; usually roots and an ombré type style. It costs a little over a hundred for a cut and color, so less than $100 for just the color.
I live in a suburb in the Midwest.
I definitely could never spend $300 on my hair- sorry!!

It used to be $200 at a pricey salon for a cut/color. I LOVE my stylist, but the drive is too far now with baby, etc.
I found a local girl and it's usually around $150.

@littlek: Honestly, from what I know about salon color, cutting out the single process color isn't going to save you much, but what would the result be if you went to single process only and cut out the highlights?

I could also think about going darker, but I did that one time and my mom told me I wasn't pretty anymore. So, I'm very sensitive about my hair.

I live in a small town and I know I'm pretty lucky when it comes to this. If I went into the bigger city, it would be well over $100. For me, it's $60 for all over color and $80 for highlights.
Over $300 is crazy to me, but I know location has a lot to do with it.

I spent about $120 but its with one of my friends. It would be about $200 if I went to her without the friend discount. I don't go every 2 months though, maybe around every 3? Can you find a compromise and get a color that doesn't require as much upkeep but go in between for a trim? I don't have to look professional for my job, but I understand that you might! Hair can be $$ but I think there are ways to cut it down. Good luck!
ETA: $300 for DC doesn't sound crazy to me at all. Definitely can spend that much in LA.

I do the single process, then wait 9-10 weeks and add highlights, then next time I go back to just single all over color with no highlights. My hair actually holds onto the highlights well so when she does the single process some of the old highlights still come through and the single color brightens them a bit. I do a lot of red so it's tough pushing to 10 weeks but it has helped with our yearly budget for stuff.

Partial highlights are $160-180? I can't remember the exact amount now, I try to ignore it, LOL! That's in NYC at the guy from What Not To Wear's salon.

I get highlights every 8-10 weeks and spend $80 plus tip. Usually around $100.

@littlek: Does that include a trim? I'm not too far from that . . . I usually get a partial highlight and a cut for $250ish, although I used to pay almost $400. I go every 10-12 weeks (usually more toward 12).

I don't spend money to get my hair coloured, but if I did, she charges between $250 - $400, although it's much closer to $400.

@MsLipGloss: I love the salon! I've been going to the same colorist for 4+ years now! I'm not as commited when it comes to cut but am for color. I think I've seen her through 3 promotions now? I try to stretch appointments out to every 12 weeks but she upped the blonde lately so it's more noticable when it grows out.

@MsLipGloss: Having faded or grown out colour is my kryptonite too. I feel SO HOT when I get my hair re-coloured and I'm much more confident until I can start to see those damn roots!

cut+color is usually $150. However, DH got laid off last week so we're trying to economize and the first thing that went was my trip to the stylist every six weeks. I have massive amounts of grey, so I had to do it myself with a box this week. It doesn't look nearly as good as when my stylist does it, and I'm pretty sure I missed some spots underneath. So rooting for DH's interview to go well tomorrow so, among other more important things, I can go back to my stylist!

@littlek: Wow! We live in Fort Lauderdale and I go to a pretty upscale Aveda salon, and I usually pay $175 for full hilights. A cut is an additional $50. I think that price is kind of crazy!!!

I feel your pain. I haven't colored mine since moving to DC! Just a cut costs as much, or more, as a cut+highlights back home... And I haven't fount anyone who does it as well!

I live just outside Boston and for my hair cut/color/tip I usually spend around $180. I try and get my color to last three months or so but it's definitely pushing it towards the end.

I spend $120 every 2 months for a full head of highlights and a trim. I live in a small town though, and that's actually the more expensive end!
DH would die if I spent $300.. he's such a cheapskate!

@littlek: @Weagle: Not sure if you're up for this, but the Aveda school in DC is way less expensive than salons. It's staffed by cosmetology students, with pro supervision (they help correct anything that isn't right and review the students' work). I don't color my hair, but I used to get my hair cut there and I loved it. The major downside, from my perspective, was that it takes a lot longer there (because of the pro review) than at a regular salon.
