DH & I leave next Wed. for a long weekend in NYC. So excited! 
He's been twice before, but this is my first time. Looking for suggestions of fun places to eat. I 
food, but we aren't big eaters so I'm looking for fun places to grab a sandwich or a snack. We have a hotel booked not too far from Times Square.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Off the top of my head:
for AMAZING cookies, I would go to Levain on the UWS (I think 74th and Amsterdam?).
for cupcakes I would do Sprinkles on the UES, right by Bloomingdales
For out of the ordinary pizza, I would do Artichoke Basille--it's like cream of artichoke soup on a pizza and it is amazing. I think there are a few locations
If you want like a tapas/small plates style restaurant, In Vino is great Italian food in small plates style.

I second Momofuku Milk bar! Also, if you go to Serendipity, don't get real food, its awful (just get the frozen hot chocolate).

I second Levain. Best cookies of all time.
I also like Momofuku Milk Bar (there are a few). Not as much as some people like it, but it's still fun to try their interesting combinations of sweets.
My favorite falafel place of all time is Taim, in the West Village.
My fave empanadas are at Empanada Mama.
Best Sri Lankan food is at Sigiri (east village) AND it's BYOB.
Best fresh/semi healthy foods is at Westville--every single thing on their vegetables menu is incredible. INCREDIBLE. There are several locations.
Dessert at Max Brenner is always fun. It's touristy, but still fun and yummy.
Dim Sum for Sunday brunch. You could go to the classic Jing Fong or Nom Wa Tea Parlor.
Eat at any of the halal carts----sooooo good.
Really good dhosas at Hamtom Chutney Company in Soho and really good Kati rolls at Kati Roll company.
Most of the places I listed are quick/casual. Hope that helps!

If you do go to Donut Plant, tell the creme brulée donut I said hi. If you are looking for bagel and lox, I love Ess-A-Bagel. Also, Miss Lily's in the village is fun.

@regberadaisy: we went to golden unicorn once, but my husband HATED IT. go figure. He also hated Nom Wa though. He's picky as all hell....the only time he said he really liked dim sum was when we ate it at some hole-in-the-wall place in San Francisco that had a million good Yelp reviews--that place had no carts and you just ordered at a counter and everything was fresh.

For bagels and lox, I would go to Russ and Daughters on the LES. Then if you're still hungry, Katz's is just a short walk away!

@regberadaisy: agreed that Jing Fong is subpar to Golden Unicorn... But if I were on vacation to NYC, i would skip both and just go to Joe's Shanghai for soup dumplings and/or Prosperity Dumpling for regular dumplings!
Momofuku Milk Bar is great for desserts, yes (compost cookie, crack pie, cereal milk soft serve, etc...) but i also love their pork buns.
Wafels & Dinges truck/food carts... get the liege wafel! with speculoos too... so good!
Grom gelato or Van Luween Artisinal Ice Cream
Caracas Arepa Bar on East 7th St
Bouchon Bakery - grilled cheese & tomato soup and pretty much all of their desserts and baked goods are great
Levain Bakery is a must! Doughnut Plant too (creme brulee, tres leches and PB&J are my faves).
For pizza, I like the slices at Eataly... It's near the original Shake Shack too if you go to that one.
at Shake Shack, I really recommend the Shroom Burger or Shack Stack... and their shakes and frozen custard! Each day they have a special custard flavor too.
Near Times Square, there's also John's Pizzeria, the one in an old church that's a fun place to eat and visit.

I've been a big fan of the Wafels & Dinges truck/cart - here is the website so you can see where it's parked while you're there: http://www.wafelsanddinges.com/
While shake shack is absolutely amazing, I usually avoid them since the lines are so long and they actually don't move that fast. At least don't go there hungry, you'll be a hot mess by the time you finally get your food. I even live by the more residential location on the UWS and the line is always down the block regardless of the day/time. They can't expand fast enough to meet demand since they use only local ingredients.
I'd also recommend going for a drink at the boat house in central park. The food isn't exactly amazing, but the scenery is awesome and it's a beautiful walk from times square. You'll past tons of food trucks/carts on your way there anyway.

the meatball shop on the lower east side is amazing!
pylos for greek in east village
7a in east village for good, cheap diner-ish food open 24hrs
caracas in e village is really great for arepas (i think @sahmo811 mentioned this too)
emporio is a really cute, romantic italian in nolita perfect for a date -- pizzas, cheeses, pastas yumm
mermaid inn in e village and upper west side is really great for seafood and raw bar

Oh and I live on the same block as Levain so I definitely agree with everyone else. Actually at my baby shower one of the questions was "What has moderndaisy craved the most since she's been pregnant?" and My DH got it right - Levain cookies, lol!

@littleredhairedgrl: How could I forget the Meatball Shop? That place is wonderful. As are your other suggestions. I lived in the East Village for a couple of years and think the EV/LES are the best food neighborhoods, personally. And I feel you on the withdrawal. We moved to Stamford for my husband's job in December and though I really do like a lot of things about my new city, I miss THE city all the time.
