Has anyone had any genetic testing done? My doc advised that I do it - either a sequential screen or blood test. But my insurance won't tell me if they cover it without the procedure code (that I can't seem to get), and I have no idea what it costs otherwise. If my baby has Downs, I will have him/her anyway, so I'm wondering if it's worth it.

We did it so as to be prepared if we were at a high risk. I just called the place that was doing the screening and asked for the billing code they would send to my insurance company and I was able to get it no problem.

We are doing it, even though it won't change the outcome of our pregnancy - we'll have the baby either way. We decided that if it comes out that we are high risk, we will opt for further testing. If further testing shows a congenital defect or anything like that, it will give us time to prepare ourselves, our home, and our families for raising a child with disabilities. We can look into resources and educate ourselves on what life is going to look like.

We did all of the genetic testing, including screening for carrier genes before I was even pregnant, since I am Jewish and certain genetic disorders run in the Jewish community. We also did the first trimester nuchal translucency screening and subsequent related blood work.
Everything has been covered under my insurance so far.

I had blood drawn at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks, all as part of testing for downs and other abnormalities. It was all covered by insurance. I also had pre-pregnancy genetic screening done (to find out whether i'm a carrier for Tay Sachs, mainly) and that was covered by insurance as well. I would just ask your doctor for the procedure code, they should be able to provide it.

We did too. Keep in mind that the sequential screen does not have any associated genetic screening unless you are deemed high risk and pop out of the algorithm. (like we did).
Also, it isn't just looking for downs. There is a fatal trisomy called Trisomy 18 that is pretty incompatible with life that the screening also checks for. We knew we wouldn't proceed with a Trisomy 18 pregnancy since I have seen too many of those cases. DS kids are happy and have good quality of life. T18, not so much.
With Mr. Jacks' mom being adopted and having no family history and my family's genetic background, we also met with a genetic counselor early in the pregnancy to assess our risks.

We had all the genetic testing done that OB made available - all the "regular" testing (CF, NT scan, 1st and 2nd trimester blood tests) as well as some additional genetic screenings. Everything was covered by my insurance (Cigna).
The billing person at your doctor's office, genetic counselor or doctor should be able to give you the insurance codes.
