I thought I might do a little online Memorial Day sale shopping but of course all the clothes are summer. Our LO will be born in October - what size(s) do you think I should get for next summer? She'll be 8 months next June but I'm afraid to go too small?

I think it's hard to tell. My little guy was born last October and he's just starting to grow out of 9 months and move into 12 months. I think he's around 18-19 lbs right now. He's around 60th percentile for weight. I would buy 9 months or 12 months.
ETA: Oh and I just want to add that most of my son's clothes are from Carters. So 12 months Carters is a safe bet.

Where are you planning to buy from? I've read Carter's runs small, so it may be more difficult to estimate from them since you don't know how big your baby will be. I'd probably buy 12m from Carter's (which is basically 9-12 months). I've read Baby Gap runs a little big, and their sizes are more spaced out, so it seems like 6-12 months would be a safe bet from Baby Gap.

P is a petite lil lady, but I would still just go for 12 month (or even a 12-18mth or 18mth) in things like shirts, jeans/jeggings, & cardi's. These are all things we buy big for P & have managed really well. She's been able to wear 12 month shirts since around 6 months, we roll her jeggings to make them capris, and roll cardi sleeves so she'll get lots of wear out of them! She still wears two sizes down in shorts & skirts though... you could always just get a range of sizes though... For crawlers I've found that shorter shorts & skirts are actually better, otherwise they get caught up AND you can always pair them with tights if they fit when it's still cool. Since most dresses range in sizes 0-6 & 6-12 months you don't have to worry so much of specific sizes! Have fun shopping!
ETA: P still wears jeggings that are "too small" as "actual" capris so you can't really go wrong! I would stay away from onesies & one-pieces b/c they're more size specific & that you can't really tell till your baby is here! P still generally wears 9 months sizes in these.

I honestly would wait, or would just get a few things like sleepers. My Oct baby is long and skinny, so most of the summer stuff I got for him from baby gap is still too big (the pants and shorts slide right off his butt) in 6-12 month sizes. Carters fits him well in 9 month sizes, but I know that size is already too small for other babies his age!
ETA I see you're having a girl--I would stick to things like dresses, skirts, and tops, which she can wear long with leggings and tights, or short, as tops, if she grows fast.

I wasted a lot of money buying sale priced items at the end of last summer. My 17 month old effectively skipped 18 to 24 month sizes, and is now in a 2T. It makes me sick when I see all the cute clothes I bought to "save money" that he will never wear. I would wait and buy next year during the memorial day sales.

I would get 12 months if I were you. I loved shopping end of year sales and had a lot of great winter items for J this year I had bought last year. Some were big but that wasn't so bad.

My LO is an October baby she is mostly wearing 9 month & 12 month stuff. I agree with @mrskc: on the Carter's being a safe bet.

I would wait. My dad went hog wild buying summer dresses for DD but she's big and had to wear them in March and April. She had all of these gorgeous Janie and Jack dresses that she'll never be able to wear.

I'd wait! I wasted a bunch of money before LO was born on clothes he was way too big for by the time it was warm enough. I know its hard to resist but there will always be other sales!

I would not, honestly. I bought some dresses last fall for my daughter that were hilariously too big. Then when she did fit them width-wise, they were too short, because she is built like a string bean. Fit is so much more than just month-size. I won't buy anything in advance for my daughter besides shoes and jackets. Or if I do find something really cheap or good deal-y, I just know that it might not fit and I may end up passing it on.

My LO is a Sept baby and is wearing mostly 12 month stuff now.

Lol.. I think b/c P is so petite I've learned to not be scared of wearing big items... or small. We did have some issues with dresses that would "hang" but we just waited until they width wise & were too short & just paired them with leggings & jeggings!
We also don't wear alot of off the hanger outfits & I tend to shop for pieces in other departments & "make" outfits so the sizing isn't as big of an issue. I do know I certainly wouldn't be buying splurge items in advance though... I couldn't deal with pricey items never getting worn! ouch!

@daniellemybelle: better a little too big in June than too small. There's still July aug sept and maybe oct depending where you live for warm weather.

Depends on where you shop? I shop almost exclusively at baby gap and I think you'll be good with size 6-12 months.
Try to buy separates and not too many onesies. They last longer.

I'm a total buy on sale-wear later kinda gal. Last summer when I was shopping for sale stuff, I mostly stuck with basics that could be worn year-round with layers if needed. Lots of Leggings, onesies, tunic/dresses that didn't matter what season it was. I would stay away from rompers and dresses.

12 months but they might be a little bug. My son is small and he's 1 and only wears 12m sizes now.

It's just so hard to know in advance. My 13 month old is in 24 month clothes, and I would have never known what size to get her in advance for when she would be 8 months old (she was in 12 or 18 month clothes I think by then). We had a few cute seasonal things people gifted to us that she never wore because the sizing was off.

I'd wait, honestly. I did a lot of pre birth shopping and I learned my lesson on that. Sales happen all of the time and while I can say that my son was about 3 months ahead of sizes, that pretty much stopped at one year.

Around that time, I would shop for 9/12 month stuff and throw in some 18 month stuff if needed.
I agree, leggings and dresses are always safe as they can be worn a bit big or a bit small.

Thanks everyone! I got pretty ambitious at first yesterday, but ended up only ordering from Carter's because the sales there were just so good. I mostly bought long sleeved bodysuits & sleepers in 3M & 6M, but I did get this outfit in 12M. I figure it can be pretty flexible since it's a tunic top that could also work as a dress.
