My 4 year old nephew loves trucks. Also maybe simple craft stuff. Simple things like a white board can provide a lot of entertainment.

I agree with @thehistoryofus, my 4 year old loves white boards, she also loves things like puzzles and ponies. And she loves takin pictures so my grandma got her a super cheap little digital camera.

My friend's 4 year old boy is obsessed with legos (like the star wars ones). I actually know several 4 year old boys who are totally into Legos. They always talk about Ninjago. I have no idea what that even is!

DD loves anything crafty like play dough, markers, paint, beading kits. She loves anything pink or purple and she loves to look cute. Puzzles!

Four-year-old nanny-boy is super into trucks and soldiers. His Santa list is a remote-control monster truck, a nerf gun, and a snow shovel (which is my favorite part )
Four-year-old niece I'm getting craft materials. She loves to make things and draw things, so I found a bead set from Melissa & Doug that she can string wooden beads on necklace/bracelet strings. Fingers crossed it's a hit.
I would say things they can make/do more actively would be really good. Craft materials, or just more active play-things that challenge them a bit more - the remote control, or the camera (fisher-price makes a really awesome digital one for kids that my niece LOVES)
