I've been at my firm for almost 4 months aand am wondering what to do about holiday gifts for my bosses. I guess we do a office wide Secret Santa that includes the three partners.
Would you still get a gift for the partners separately?
Do you get a gift for your boss/supervisor?

I don't gift up. (really, I don't gift at all at work. beyond our yankee swap)

Yes, I do give a gift to my senior partners. But we have a close personal relationship as well (for example they hosted an engagement party and a baby shower for me in their home). This year I bought them a nice set of binoculars for dolphin watching at their FL home.

I have no problems gifting up, if they're good bosses. 
But wasn't sure if it's overkill if there's already an office wide swap.

I have 4 bosses and I always gift all four. I think its a small price to pay for good will before we dive into the busiest time of year for our office between January and February. But take me with a grain of salt - I'm a gifter and I also try to get something for everyone on our floor.
Usually I get the 2 male bosses a bottle of alcohol. The women I get something like a bottle of wine or a nice hand cream for their desk.
For my colleagues (and the bosses), I usually make loaves of eggnog bread, which everyone loves, and I usually sponsor a bagel platter for the administrative staff.
Again, I'm a total gifter.

@regberadaisy: In the past I have not had a clear line of supervision (3-4 people at times) so I did not gift but I do always bring in a HUGE box of homemade cookies and coffee one day.
Now, I have one distinct boss - whom I am very close with. She will also be closing on her dream home near Christmas so I will likely do something "bigger" as a Christmas/House Warming gift. Maybe $50-75.
The only other people I give gifts to are our executive assistants...bc they are amazing. They do not support me directly but are always willing to help - usually a $25 gift is what I do. Right now I have no direct reports that sit in this country - so no one else will get a gift.

I might bake a plate of cookies. I make trays up every year for gatherings, so setting one aside for my boss is no big deal or expense, but appreciated.

No, but we are somewhat barred by ethical rules from gifting to our boss. He would probably ask us not to gift him anything.

I always thought you gifted "down" if you gifted at all. It doesn't work this way at my company (and seems very strange to me!)

I think it's a nice gesture, but also not necessary I only did it once and it was actually not very appreciated so I never did it again. I just figured maybe it wasn't common around here and they thought it was weird.
However, I have gotten gifts for team members (I was a PM so I got small Starbucks gift cards for my designers, developers, partner, and one of my bosses who was more of a peer than a boss). That went over really well and I'd do it again

I gifted my boss my first year (I think a small fancy box of macarons) but learned that the rest of my coworkers don't really do anything. So, I stopped stressing about it. My husband doesn't really "gift-up" as well, though he does give our our family photo Christmas cards.
My coworkers and I will just bring in treats and share with everyone, or do small gifts. Last year I gifte my boss a couple Starbucks ornaments bc she really likes coffee, but I presented in a very casual, look how cute, sort of way.

If you like to bake/make gifts at home to give out to friends/coworkers I'd include the boss in that but not do anything special for him/her.

As a gov employee I'm not allowed to give anyone who supervises me a gift of more than $10/year!
