Is this common at your work?
I think the execs at my office do this but the rest of us just give out 2 weeks notices when we get a new job.

No, I would never tell my current job that I was interviewing for a new job

I did this at a job where I was the office receptionist. I gave notice because we were a close-knit group and almost like family! They knew I wouldn't stay in the position forever, and I knew that I wanted to use people in the office as references. So I gave them a heads up that I would start applying for jobs in October (and then I got a job and left in February).
At my current job, I don't think I would. Unless I was making a major career change of some kind.

Definitely not! Unless you're trying to use it as some sort of raise/promotion tactic, people don't tell their current job they are actively looking for another one.

No, I have a phone interview next week. My boss gave me his blessing when I said that if I find something, I'm leaving. Other than that, he doesn't know about my upcoming phone interview or putting my resume up everywhere and applying.

I told my boss once, but the company was about to go under. So she knew that I didn't want to stick around till the end. So much easier taking off for interviews that way. But otherwise I would never.

I would never give my current employer a heads up I was thinking about leaving at only the phone interview stage!

Internally? Like you're interviewing for another role at your current company...I've done it.

NO, I would never tell them I was interviewing, I'm sure I would be out the door if they found out!

No. Unless I was in a really tough situation, I wouldn't give notice until I had a new job lined up. I don't know of many people who have quit a job before finding a new one.

Yes. But I fully acknowledge that my relationship with my boss is "different". He has told me when he had other offers on the table and he has passed me leads when he's been contacted by recruiters just putting out feelers to see if he knows anyone that might be looking.
We have a very fluid conversation routinely about what I dislike about my current role. And he's very frank with me about my feelings and what can be done here.
