I think I've finally managed to convince DH that we NEED a glider and I'm getting close to choosing the West Elm Graham I think (going to go test it next week). It's SO pricey already and the matching ottoman is $399! IDK if it seems worth it or if I can just use something stationary and find it for less.
Any input from experience?

I don't think a glider is necessary. I never got one and was fine.
I think if you buy one you'll love it though.

I didn't buy an ottoman with our glider - I didn't get why I'd want my feet to glide too! It seemed really awkward in store. I made a giant pouf and stuffed it for an ottoman, but think some of the knitted ones would be neat too - and multi-functional

PLEASE PLEASE take my advice and skip it!! I INSISTED on the matching gliding ottoman ($399 for me as well) and I so regret it. All it does it take up space. The main function is for the other parent to sit on while the one feeding the baby is in the glider. Trying it out in the store, you think it's so comfortable to use the ottoman, but that's when you're trying it out without juggling a baby!! (Also, on that note, make sure you can get up out of the glider without using your hands because when you have a delicately sleeping baby in your arms, you have to be able to get up. If it's too cushy or comfy and you can't get up you'll need another person to take the baby from you so you can stand up!)
Instead, get a nursing footstool. Medela makes one and it's perfect. The angle is really nice for your feet while you're nursing or bottle feeding. And it's nice and small so when you're not using it you can hide it next to or behind the glider. It's not gorgeous, but it's cheap, and it's hide-able, and SO much more comfortable.

Oh... the other thing the ottoman does is it's a landing spot for the Boppy pillow. Haha. But seriously, that's IT. (I actually have the nursing stool between the glider and the ottoman to put my feet on.)

@mrs. wagon: Thanks! Those are great points. Our nursery and living room (hopefully future home for the glider) aren't that big. I already have a pair of ottomans I might just use instead. They just sell all the ottomans with all the chairs and u think u must need the set. If it's for DH then I REALLY wouldn't need it b/c he would probably only be home or awake to help with one feeding a day.

i bought a pricey glider and matching ottoman from land of nod and i've used it every single day for both kids. i guess it depends on the person! i do think the matching ottoman was unnecessary (i think it was $400). but my glider is soooo comfortable and i got so much use out of it, it was worth it.
before i had that glider, i had this cheap one because the land of nod one took months to arrive, and it was perfectly fine too!
honestly it was pretty great!

I have the exact one from Amazon that Mrs. Bee linked to. I love it and you can't beat the price. I used it a lot when nursing and still use it at least twice a day for story time before naps and bedtime for LO. I would highly recommend that one, and I definitely wouldn't spend more than that.

@mrs. wagon: that's exactly what I used my gliding ottoman for as well! Boppy shelf.
But actually DH used the ottoman a lot. DD went through a phase where she slept on top of him while he was in the Glider + ottoman (not our finest sleep phase) and I actually think he would call it necessary or at least nice to have.

@Mrs. Bee: glider totally necessary for us too. We still use it every single day. And we have a similar setup-- our super expensive custom ordered custom upholstered glider and ottoman (ours is from Best Chairs) and another cheaper set (hand-me-down) very similar to that Amazon set. To be honest, the cheaper set is more comfortable.......
@T-Mom: hehe Boppy shelf! And I could totally see it as useful for if baby is sleeping on your chest, because then you could be really reclined. Can't really do that with the nursing stool alone.

We have an ottoman that I had bought a few years ago at Kohl's - it's just a small, stuffed one that opens at the top for storage. I decided to use that in the nursery instead of getting the matching one, and I'm glad we didn't waste the money. I think we used it more in the early weeks when LO was sleeping on our chests a lot, but now we hardly use it.
I also second making sure your glider is one you can get out of without assistance! I tried out every glider at Babies R Us to make sure I could get up without using the arms to prop me out.

@littlecasita1122: I LOVE storage ottomans!! We have a huge upholstered storage bench in Wagon Jr.'s room that will eventually hold his toys and stuffed animals (it used to hold our extra linens and pillows at the foot of our bed) and we have a storage ottoman in our living room that we use for all of our chargers, remotes, etc. I love storage that is pretty and useful for something else as well.

I have a dutailier glider and ottoman that was relatively inexpensive. I didn't buy it till L was close to five months old. I so regret not getting it earlier - I nurse her everyday in the chair and it's sooo comfy!

@Mrs. Bee: Thanks for your input! I'm sure the Stork works wonderfully, and DH would be happier with the price, but I'm kind of ridiculous and wanted a non-wood "furniture" looking glider.

Unfortunately we don't have a Buy Buy Baby here and BRU has only a small selection I didn't really gravitate towards any of them. I went to this nice boutique, Bel Bambini, and they had WONDERFUL Duatailier chairs but DH was floored by the prices! My favorite one had a pull thing that makes the chair stable before you stood up, but it was over $1K for the glider alone.

@shopaholic: that Dutalier glider is the hand-me-down we got. It's almost 10 years old and I believe has been reupholstered once (at least the ottoman has) and even though it's not as pretty as my custom fully upholstered glider, it's more comfortable!

I hardly EVER use my ottoman. I like the glider for the room but could have just used our lazyboy. I would use a $10 foot stool over the ottoman if it wasn't included with the chair we got (for less than you're going to spend on the ottoman!!!) Don't do it. It's not worth it. I have a child who likes frantic movements rather than smooth movements, too so that probably is a reason I don't use it much. She likes to be ROCKED, not roooooocked.

I love my glider! We skipped the ottoman and bought the nursing stool instead. The stool is perfect - it doesn't take up much space and it tilts, which is easier to push off of when you rock.

@shopaholic: yes, we also got an incredible Babi Italia crib from them, as well as the crib mattress and a changing table / dresser combo. Basically baby room #2. They saved us soooo much money!! Their kids are 7 and 5 so they just wanted it all OUT of the house asap!

we started out without one but ended up buying one because my back couldnt handle nursing her all night and rocking her to sleep. A Glider makes like so much easier, you can do without it but its so much harder without it

I love our set as well - it's a fully upholstered set (not one of the wooden ones) that we got it on sale at babies r us - it was $500 for the set.

I have the storkcraft glider (w/o the ottoman) that Mrs. Bee linked...two of them actually....and a medela nursing stool. Worked perfect and got all three things for under $230, including shipping! I actually really like the flexibility of the nursing stool instead since you can use it on the couch, etc too.

I have a glider and a nursing stool. this might just be me, but I can't have my knees locked - so a gliding ottoman was pointless. I like to push my legs against the nursing stool to rock
