How about a gift certificate so she doesn't have to carry much, and she can get what she'd like when she gets home.

When I first introduced DH to my family, that was pretty standard. Movie giftcards are sort of a go to gift for both of our families. You could wrap it up with a couple boxes of candy if you want something for her to "open"

Or depending on your spending limit, maybe an assortment of giftcards? Something for coffee, something for a lunch type place, and the movies? Or, my SIL often gives me Trader Joes ones. I tend to use them on more fun stuff than plain old groceries.

A makeup pouch. A cute reusable bag - I really like Baggu bags. Gift card - starbucks, sephora/ulta, or nordstrom.

Last year, the plan was to gift my SIL a gift card for a trendy bar or restaurant that she and her boyfriend could go to.(we didn't buy boyfriend his own gift since we didn't see them over the holidays) -- they live abroad so we don't actually know any of the places they like. We ended up gifting Euros and a note about how our intention was for a fun night out together. Maybe you could do something like this for her/them, and use your BIL to get ideas for a bar/restaurant?

Coffee, tea, LUSH bath bombs, fashion scarf, bracelet, adult coloring book and pencils, photo frame, travel cord organizer, book, monogrammed luggage tags, Christmas ornament.

I would do something consumable like nice chocolates.

L'Occitane hand cream is one of my favorite go-to gifts. Also, what about a *local* gift, like a Red Sox (or Pats) hat? I wouldn't do anything personal (like jewelry), and I (for one), don't drink coffee (or really anything at SBux other than maybe hot chocolate).

i second @pwnstar: and the hand cream...pair the smaller tube, a bottle or nailpolish and a $5 starbucks card for a coffee on you would be awesome!

@Foodnerd81: I just ordered a small in the leather pouches from West Elm for one of my girlfriends. I think that it's SO cute and could be useful if she is out on the town.
