It would be terrifying, because I don't have a support system in the US.
I'm not comfortable with putting my baby in daycare because of our alternative parenting choices, but I don't know how I could work to support us while simultaneously caring for LO.

I would sell our house and use the funds from life ins (basic policy through work that covers one year salary) to pay for a loss on the house. I would then move into an apt and move on. I might keep his sports car, but I would sell his other cae and motorcycle.

We both have decent insurance policies (and DH's is better than decent) so there'd be a financial cushion for either me to stay home with DS until he's in school or for DH to send him to daycare or hire a nanny. I'd probably go back to school for something like nursing.

I wouldn't stay in this apartment--I don't think I could stomach. I'd probably move back in with my SIL for a while, or maybe my ILs. I think DH might move in with his parents for a while, just for the extra support.

I would take the life insurance and pay off the house. My parents and family would help until I got back on my feet and I would have to get a job. Dh would continue life as is but have to take care of LO and find someone to watch her everyday so he could work. I hate thinking about these things.

I have been thinking about this a LOT recently, and am glad I'm not the only one who worries about such scenarios. In fact, I've been considering going back to work for this very reason, and DH thinks I'm nuts. I'm terrified I'll have been out of the workforce for too long and won't be able to reenter if God forbid something happens to my DH at a relatively young age.

I make sure to keep my teaching license current for this very reason. I would get life insurance money and pay off the house. It's the only debt we have and we live pretty cheap so I'd be okay financially for the foreseeable future. I would stay in town to be close to my parents and his parents and I would look for a teaching job. I would have his dad sell my husband's car and jeep since he knows the most about vehicles. I would have his buddy sell his guns and ammo since he knows the most about that. I would invest a ton for my daughter's school.

@Mrs. Pen: We actually have built into our plan that I would need to take a 6month to 1 year leave of absence from work and need enough insurance money to be able to take that time off to grieve and restart our lives. I don't know if I would actually need to take that much time, but I wanted the option.

I would definitely move to the city my mom (and extended family) lives and raise DS there. The cost of living is cheaper there anyway. I'd get some life insurance from dh's work to help out.

Next time I'm definitely marrying for money.

Yeeeshh... right now for us, it would be back to square one for either of us. We don't have kids so we wouldn't have to function that in, but we don't have life insurance or wills either. We have both agreed that as soon as there are children in the picture, that needs to be sorted. At the moment, whoever was left (sad) would probably stay in the house we're renting, but we'd need to have financial solutions in place once we're a one income family.

I think if either of us passed, the other person would move back east. There's more job opportunities and family support for the kids.

I'd try and sell our house since it's too much space for two people and too expensive to carry the mortgage on my salary alone. I'd see if I could work my current job remotely, and if so, I'd relocate to my hometown as soon as I could sell the house. If not, I'd either see about finding a new job or move super close to my existing job so I didn't have to worry about commuting any longer. I'd prefer to get close to my family though so I had support. Oh, and I'd get rid of DH's dog. Silver lining!

Considering my hubby is employed in one of the most dangerous occupations in America, yes, I've thought of this. If something happened to him, I would take the life insurance money and pay off our property. He doesn't actually have life insurance yet (but we're planning to buy a policy in the next few months), but we're gonna make sure he gets enough so I can pay off the house and land and invest the rest so me and the kids could make do just on the returns if we had to. I would drive my photography business a lot harder and would probably pick up some odd jobs during the busy parts of the farming year to supplement the investment returns. Actually, if something happened to him at his current job (he works for another farmer), I'm almost positive that his (our, I guess, since I work a lot at the farm during certain parts of the year) boss would do what he could to make sure we would be taken care of. Give me hours so I could our health insurance policy, or something.
If something happened to me, I honestly don't know what DH would do. He could put the kids in daycare and pretty much continue as before since he brings home most of the bacon, but I can see his family convincing him to move the family back to PA so they could help with the kids. Which would make me sad because THIS is the life I want for my kids. But oh well.

Please, please, please discuss this with your SO's and have a plan and your documents in order. We are all relatively young and its easy to think that this isn't something that you need to worry about right now, but accidents happen. My SIL lost her husband in a motorcycle accident 4 years ago and spent 2 years in court fighting with his ex wife for rights to his estate. He had never updated his life insurance beneficiary and in the end his ex wife received the majority of his life insurance. My SIL was left with a small portion of the estate to set aside for their son and had all the responsibility of settling his debts and other financial obligations.

If DH were to pass I would sell the house and move back to WI to be near my family. His life insurance and the profits from the sale of the house would be enough to pay off our debts and for me to put a down payment on a new place up north, but I would need to work and rely heavily on my family for support.

I would sit at home and be severely depressed for quite some time while my mother or mother in law raised our son for a month or so. That's just me being honest.
At some point, i'd get my shit together and go back to work. Financially we'd be OK to survive and stay in this house, but I'd be lonely and I would need to work to feel like I had a life.
If my kids were older, say 12? I'd be better off because then at least I would have a child that would snap me out of my funk and force me to do stuff, whereas a baby will not.
I'm going to talk to dh tonight and some sort of solid plan.
